Would you pay £24m for Lukaku?

What is the maximum you'd pay for Rom?

He may have not done much but what i seen from Rom on Saturday was a much better touch, much better hold up play and much better passing. He was never going to dominate the game on Saturday, as CCF said, pretty much his preseason game.

Id stick him on that Chambers next weekend, although i guess Mertesacker will be playing. He'll score against Arsenal 100%.

Some football fans are idiots, absolute idiots.

Saw a 'Bobby out' tweet on saturday ffs !!!

cheers for the neg rep for first post - apologies for having an opinion that you don't concur with.

Some football fans have opinions that differ from others - when backed up with tangible reasons they are still dismissed...

Anyhow, is it inconceivable to state state that Lukaku was marked out of the game on Saturday and offered very little imagination or tenacity to break free of the shackles?

Its not the first time we have seen this. I watched him closely in the world cup and barring his cameo against an exhausted USA defence he looked very ineffective.

He made performances very similar in games last season where fitness could not be used as an excuse.

Ah you're right. How much do you think we can get for him? There's still a chance we can flog him off before the window closes. Maybe we can then put in a cheeky bid for <insert name here>.

He is 21, and all these negativaties are why we have him, and not a CL club.

1 prem game mate, give him a chance.

What part of what he is saying is wrong mate?

He's not saying he's crap, he's saying he has a lot to prove. And he does, which is why it was pointed out that saying Lukaku "guarantees goals" when he's only did it in a counter attacking system prior to now is valid.

He has many questions to answer. Who knows, he probably will answer them, but everyone saying he's "definitely" going to come good are being premature.

He probably will net against Arsenal as we'll set up in a way that suits his game - but once again at Leicester we saw an inadequate performance from Lukaku when we were on the front foot, as we have seen for the entirety of 2014. You can't just ignore that.

I thought he led the line well, and under the way we tip tapped it side wards in the 2nd half - he received very little service - not match fit yet so he will come good if he scores two next week and our defence holds firm - fans on here will state it was the best 28 million ever spent!

He is already good !!!

No he's not - he's hit and miss. Good will be a label I'll put on him when he's consistent in his overall game.

I actually think he's a world class off the shoulder finisher - I actually blame Martinez for how he's using him in games when we're dominating possession and pushing teams back, because thus far he's using him like Emile Heskey when that's by far and away the weakest part of his game.

Against Arsenal, you'll see their defence push up and Lukaku will receive the ball more often around 30 yards out and given time to turn and face and run the opposition. That's where he's world class. But pegging him up against Wes Morgan and not accommodating tactically to get him free of his marker is silly.

Its not a case of flog him, its a case of lets critique him "accurately". I would love nothing more than to be able to say that without reservations this lad is going to be immense for us - but I can't. People seem to forget his no shows and bring back his game against Arsenal for example - yes a strong performance, but it wasn't a consistent level of performance.

He has the potential to be very good, but at this moment - taking into account his best performances and worst performances there seems to be a massive gulf between the two extremes. This is what concerns me the most.

I don't want to sell him, I want the lad to show me that he has it between the ears to make the most of his attributes, his laziness is a concern - when he is faced with a player who is "up for it" - he can become subdued and disengaged.

This is not a knee jerk reaction, we have seen him play in the world cup, we seen him play 30 odd games last season. This is a concern I would likew to see him address.

The euphoria of signing him seems to be still with many fans, I look forward to him justifying it.

2 seasons in the prem with 17 and 16 league goals respectively and only 21. That's stinks of potential to better so is worth what we paid because we haven't had that for some years. Don't heap too much expectation on him just yet and think he is going to all of a sudden score every game or notch 30 goals per season. He will be an asset to us this season as he was to West Brom and us last season.

If he stands still now, and gets no better. We still have a 15 goals a season player. That is a good player.

Will he become a top player, maybe.

To be fair, the tactical focus on intricate wing play and getting the full backs beyond is hurting Lukaku more than his own assets. His primary job is to drop deep and give it to Pienaar so they can build down the left, or look for Coleman on the right, before running into the box.

All a centre half has to do is allow him to do just that, then mark him tight when he jogs in the box and the attack fizzles out as the ball is worked centrally as we have no dynamic five yard runners to find half a yard in the box.

So it's 100% a tactical issue for me. I'm not going to criticise Lukaku's mindset, because he's proven that when he's the focal point of the overall attack instead of feeding on scraps, he's absolutely deadly. But I just don't see the point in spending £28m on a player and then not playing to his strengths.
