Would you pay £24m for Lukaku?

What is the maximum you'd pay for Rom?

It's all about perceptions, It could be he was playing to instructions as in...yeah Rommy I know you're not fit, but try and stay on for the full game and see if anything breaks your way...or...he might be half fit, he might be off form, he might even be a dud... but he doesn't seem to be arsed about trying... may need Straq type effort transplant, but that's not a viable option, you're either born with that gene or you ain't.
We have to hope this is the exception rather than the rule.
yes it's only one game in and he has potential for enough goals to justify his fee/hype
but
he has plenty of previous from last season for 'Appearing' to be CBA'd

He had games like yesterday last season, and a week later was fantastic, its something we are going to have to deal with. At his age i dont expect anything different, if he was great everyweek he would be at Chelsea right now.

Needs to hit the ground running against the Arse next week. I'm sure the fans will be right behind him!

-Late afternoon kick off? Check
-First home game of the season? Check
-Capacity crowd? Check
-Big bad boss 28 million pound record signing with previous for GBH against said opposition? Check

Unlucky Arsenal, you just lost at Goodison bingo

if he was great every week he would be going for a similar fee as what ronaldo went to real for! ha.

it's very rare that a 21 year old will be the lead striker of the 5th best team in one of the big leagues, it's a testament of how good he is. every player in the world has an off day, they also have a lot more off days when they're younger, hence the term learn with experience. it's why we need that backup in prompt, so they can come on for him or join him up front in games where he's more miss.

there's very few strikers in the league i'd rather lead our line though.

do people really think there is any other striker with his potential that we could sign, short of producing another rooney it ain't gonna happen, we had to make this deal, even when off form last season we were so much better with him in the team than without
Frankly, I'm not interested in potential -- its players who have reached their peak already we need. Does anyone really think that if Lukaku was to have two good seasons with us, in which he progressed to a level well above what he is now but still short of full development, that he'd stay with us to fully realise his development? No, he'd be whisked away by a richer club. So lets not talk of how great he's going to become -- irrelevant to us.

So yes, for £28m we could have bought someone who would do more of a job for us over the next two seasons than Lukaku. Personally I'd have preferred Bony.

Kopites everywhere falling over themselves saying he cost too much. Real Kopites that, not faux post modern blue put downs.

but we're da bittters.

the same will be saying what a bargain lallana was when he has his 1 good game out of 10 i.e. coutinho. kopites are the worst judges of a footballer so their opinions matter none.

and if that's the case we'll sell lukaku for about 45-50m and buy two bonys in their peak. i understand your point, but we were thinking long term with the signing

Irony is completely lost on that lot. They neglect to remember that they support the club that recently paid only £3 million less for a 26 year-old Adam Lallana and spunked £7 million more on Andy Carroll lol

we aren't capable of signing such players which was my point, our previous relationship with lukaku made his signing possible, the fact no one has yet signed Bony would suggest that it's a complicated deal for one reason or another. The staff already know Rom, they know he fits in and will be aware of his capabilities far more than a player they have scouted. In my mind it's a signing we had to make, I'm unconvinced striker wise we are capable of making a better one at this point

My concerns about signing him were brought to my attention in the 90 minutes against Leicester.

Was he fit? Probably not, but was he really lacking that much fitness that he couldn't look anything but pedestrian against a lower level defence??? No.

He can prove to be a worthy £28m signing, but to do that he needs to change his mindset and that is my biggest concern.

For me it appears that Roms shortfalls in certain games are excused by not being played "the right way"... absolute nonsense. For a striker who supposedly has the lot, he shows limitations when defenders mark him tight.

His play when dropping deep was ok, better than last year. His movement was completely and utterly non existent however. But he hit a 40 yard pass to Baines.... great. Did anyone pick up on his back heel when his marker was touch tight and conceded possession when 2-1 up with less than 10 minutes to play?

It is likely that there will be games where he amazes and then the faithful will return with "I told you so's" - then there will be games like the Leicester one (palace last year, Southampton etc etc) - where we wonder "where were you???".

He is going to split the fan base. He is a fan favourite before he is a player - and that is my concern. He and Bobby have a lot of work to do together to become the player Martinez believes is worthy of a £28m spend... its not fitness - its his mindset.

Leicester was practically Rom's first pre season game, he's only going to get better. He made a few good runs which weren't picked out by through balls (though a few were close).

He's going to be a beast. When he starts beasting defenders like Morgan and Moore he'll be unstoppable.
