True that. The “big game” tag is subjective. Surely winning the games you should be winning are just as, if not more important than beating teams at the top of the league. We get the same number of points for beating Watford as we do for beating Man City.

In fact if you maximize performance in this way a high finish takes care of itself. Very few teams, even the Man Utds, etc tend to win against the best sides away from home. There is a reason Arsenal have not won at Man Utd for years and years, as a draw is actually a good result in this scenario.

You have very little opportunity to win these games anyway, as there are only four or so per year.

People point out the few games Moyes messed up by being overly negative without giving credit for the amount of times he won the games he should have, and for the times he managed to galvanize the team out of bad runs. We had a number of occasions under his tenure where we made bad starts and then ended the season like a train.

15 points from 12 games. At a time when he did not £200 million at his disposal.

He won 4 in 25.
Probably more to do with my age

I remember when I was a kid and my dad said I could place a £1 bet on the game and I bet on Everton to win and then lee carsley scores the winner

Good times

Some other memorable ones like the 3-0 thumping and coleman scoring the winner in the league cup in extra time and there was always some kind of drama like the clattenburg derby. Stevie g getting sent off, Phil Neville handball on the line in the last minute, Kuyt scoring two pens and going in two footed, Suarez diving in front of moyes, Suarez getting Rodwell sent off, fellaini and that Greek defender getting sent off

Some good memories

Interesting. I always felt the signs were always clear his last team were capable of special things. Wonder if we would have been fourth rather than fifth if he had Lukaku.

Strange thing is he had long ago abandoned the Dogs Of War approach when he had time to build his own side over a number of seasons. Doesn’t stop people claiming he was a long ball merchant!

Good post, but he wasn't putting forwards the big game argument, it was the specific 4 teams in away games argument for this one...

You mention City, but they don't count in the argument presented, it's more selective than that.
It's only beating 4 specific teams... away games only..: that matters in a season is the gist of it.

Like you say, no credit for the those above that we could/should of won of course, just every defeat or draw being solely down to 'bottling it'.

The Big game argument is a bit different and as you say subjective.

A real shame only away wins count, that would be a decent record else :(

To be honest, at the moment I would bite someone’s hand off if they could win all the games we should be winning. We just seem to constantly drop silly points.

If that means we use the tactic of always using Pickford to launch the call instead of messing around in dangerous areas then I am more than happy to play “non progressive” football. Emery keeps doing it at Arsenal and it is totally pointless.

If Moyes had lukaku he would be running the channels and defending corners .
Not slotting

Probably true mate, though listening to him about Gordon last week "he's a real talent but he plays in the same position where we have a lot of quality"... Yeah Marco, players like Gylfi or Walcott, Richarlison etc who've barely had a decent game between them lol

I'd rather have an u23 player in that Morgan Schneiderlin thats for sure!

Yeah those comments from Silva made me laugh...

What is wrong with calling a spade a spade? He was poor at Man Utd, had a good first season at Sociedad (beating treble-winning Barcelona) and was poor the second, had an impossible job at Sunderland and did well at West Ham.

You think its OK for a manager to walk into a club and say they are crap and going to go down anyway? Before a ball has even been kicked?

He never used to be like that, he raised us up when he first arrived with a bit of self belief. He is not the same manager as he was back then. Not even close.

You have to remember at that time spurs & Liverpool were nothing special and going through transition. We finished above the [Poor language removed] that season and had been close With spurs for a few years. City while spending money still hadn’t got it completely right, still very inconsistent. And a good but not great Arsenal team finished 4th like every season.

It was really Utd & Chelsea who were the only big players, With city just about to catch them.

I'd play 10-1 formation with Pickford up front on his own if it won us games :)
