Yakubu out for season

Only a loan player needed in January. It would be short sighted to blow a wad on a new striker for him then to play second fiddle to Yak/Saha when they're fit.

Who in their right mind is going to loan out a proven striker that actually scores goals, and that can handle the prem for the second half of the season?
And assuming we really have no money to spend we should be looking for someone in the mould of Marcus Bent who has the pace to drag defences around and isn't afraid of being challenged, who can create openings for our more skilful midfielders to finish off.

January can seem to be so close but in football terms in situations like this it might as well be light years away. Not counting the FA cup, how many games to January?

That is critical and who are we playing?

Loads of players overseas that would fancy a crack at the Premiership mate, its a wage thing.

And youre not serious about Marcus Bent are you?

He has a point on the type of player though.

I said on here before AJ was sold that 4-5-1 is our best formation, with AJ ahead of the Yak. I took a load of stick for it but when alone upfront Yakubu isnt the most effective player. His lethargic style has a knock-on effect on the rest of the team. When AJ/Saha play upfront, as in today... they can stretch their defence more, creating room for other players (like Cahill....) in and around the box and the workrate from the front gives the rest of the players the impetus to run that extra yard.

Loads of overseas clubs aiming to qualify for European competitons might not be in such a hurry to agree.

Bent cost about the same as the current squad's weekly wage bill, ran his socks off helping us to finish fourth (having been 2nd for much of the season) and we sold him on for a profit.
I realise it's unrealistic looking for a repeat. But we live in hope.

I agree about Saha, even if I don't agree about Yakubu - I saw plenty quality games of Yak, when he was up-front alone.
But AJ? Can't hold the ball, can't be a part of quick-short passing exchanges - so what's the point of having him up-front alone? IMHO you can only do it for counter attack purposes, for all other situations you need an other (and different in style to him) striker playing alongside.

Yakubu is very good in a 4-5-1 at home, when the burden is on us to attack.

He can be [Poor language removed] in a 4-5-1 away from home because he slows up any move of a quick counter attack, but then again, most of our team aren't capable of breaking quickly because we just don't have the raw pace to get in behind teams.

He's brilliant in a 4-5-1 at home though, last season showed it.

Our best combination was Yak/Cahill last season. AJ/Cahill started well but became innefective. AJ runs away from the play and no one could keep up with him. His lack of hold up play was there to see aswell. His first touch was a disgrace.

Yak holds the ball up so that Cahill can get beyond him and run off him. When there on form it works a treat. No way was AJ better than Yak in the lone striker role, not a chance.

He ran more, that's about it.

all we need is love............

bad news this, we lose him every other year for african c.n. and now when we could get the full season out of him, although for the most part this year it's been as if he's been away.
some scouring of e-bay, exchange and mart and rothmans yearbook will be being done to find a short term loan for some 'arl guy who can fill nets like a fisherman despite being 63 and 'cos of his age will only expect 10bob wages, expect to see a smoking zone as he will probably be from the 'woodbine at 1/2 time' generation or if we are lucky 'gitanes' or even 'ducados' for the exoticness of a foreigner.

Agreed.

I'm [Poor language removed] gutted about the loss of Yak.

Maybe so. This season though?

The 3-0 stuffing of Liverpool at home proved AJ was decent in a 4-5-1 too.

True but i think the loss of Carsley has contributed to it.

We really need someone who can hold the midfield and give it some balance, it will allow Cahill to support Yak more and also give the centre midfielder the licence to support.

AJ was good yeh but his hold up play was poor and to be a lone striker, you need to be able to do this.
