Yeah but they both play for good teams ffs.

Someone else said that too.

Okay then. Less assists than Zaha and Payet, whose teams can't buy a win.

And players who play a similar role as him at inferior teams (the likes of Matty Phillips, Redmond, Stanislas, Lanzini, Chadli, Anichebe) - they are all outscoring him by a minimum rate of 3 to 1.

Compared to some of our other players, hes done okay. But compared to the rest of the league, his output is poor. Questioning the signing is fair game I think.

Exactly, I've not known a player divide opinion so much sincd Fellaini. Suppose it's all about opinions, all I see is a clumsy hoofing speed merchant. Take the United game for example, about 25 minutes in or so, he gets played in by Lukaku and lashes it across the 6 yard box? Mirallas just misses it, now I see it and its a shot. He doesnt look up and he hits it way too hard to be a cross (think it even goes out for a throw in).

Other people will watch it and that its a great cross. It's not. Its a crap shot.

Edit: he does look up. I stand by my notion its a shot.

Quite Narcissistic of me to quote my own post - but just noticed their goal came directly from Bolasie being bustled off a ball directly to his feet like a 6 year old girl. Then note everything we did of any merit afterwards (albeit on a short highlights clip) had absolutely nothing to do with him.

Palace have scored 7 more goals than us. And those two players only have one more assist than Bolasie anyway, not like they're streets ahead. Then there's the clear cut chances Bolasie has created that were spurned.

You have to perform some contortions to dismiss that stat really. It suggests you have an agenda.

To dismiss what stat? The "Assists and assists that should have been cause I reckon we should have scored" stat?

I have no agenda whatsoever. I've said earlier in the thread, hes been one of our better players and we'll miss him.

But in terms of output he is being outperformed by wingers/attackers across the league The like of Zaha, Matty Phillips, Stanislas, Lanzini. All i'm saying is questioning spending big money on a player like that is fair game.

Because their players are creating more, which is surely what we're asking of Bolasie and the rest?

Dunno, not sure it's an agenda. I've been broadly ok with Bolasie's output so far but as @davek says, the entire team was setup to get him the ball as quickly as possible by any means necessary - usually pumping it down the line. And while he is great for moments of inspiration he's much too temperamental and inconsistent to build a side around.

Burnley's winner came in similiar circumstances.

Well Bolasie is creating plenty. I agree Del, Kev and Lennon need todo more.

lol

And this is the fundamental flaw in this whole "assists" nonsense.

It is a stat which relies totally on the predatory skills of the player being "assisted".

If he scores you get an "assist" no matter how negligible your touch actually was.....think Lukaku when Bolasie pushed him out the way at Burnley.

If he misses you get zilch, even if you have laid it on a plate in front of an open goal for him.....Barkley missing a sitter from Bolasie's cross at Baggies.

But how many sitters are we actually missing? Not that many. Given we have Lukaku upfront he should be creating more goals.

Was he though?

14 games, 1 goal, 4 assists is quite decent, but not stellar for a player through which our entire attacking play was put through. Inbetween a lot of wild crossing and unpredictable play. He's also blessed with crossing in to one of the best finishers in the country (not that it should detract from anything, just qualify it).

Had he signed next season and we were a solid outfit that had finished in the top 7, he'd likely have been tolerated a lot more than he was before he got injured.

Which is perfectly fine as an occasional outlet and can be very effective. The weird thing is that it has seemed to be our single notable tactic for a while.

The fact a manager who has worked with some of the best players and coaches in the history of the game but persists with a basic and easily nullified tactic suggests a complete lack of faith in the current squad and no desire to coach them into improving. I suspect he intends to upgrade the team through recruitment rather than, you know, management/motivation or something crazy like that. In the meantime it doesn't look like much will change on the pitch

None of this is Bolasie's fault, though. He's been given a task close to something like Suarez had at Liverpool, which was essentially to lash it forward and watch a world class player do something amazing. There's only a handful of players who can do something with that.
