Young EFC Players Out On Loan 16-17

You know your stuff loon, is there a potential first team Everton player in Callum?

What struck me today watching the results was the number of ex-young (prob now old) Blues hitting the net....Vaughan, Schumacher, Akpan. We seem to be getting players who can make a career in the game through the Academy, and do very well with that, suppose the biggest challenge is getting players good enough to play First steam.

Connolly deservedly took the headlines yesterday but there were a number of loan players out there...

Premier League
West Bromwich Albion - Brendan Galloway was an unused sub in the 0-4 away loss to Spurs

Championship
Wigan Athletic - Callum Connolly made his debut, scored twice and was booked in 2-0 away win over Burton Albion

OS Match Report
"There are debuts and there are debuts. 19 year-old defender Callum Connolly was a late inclusion in the team after a loan deal from Everton was secured in time to play and he made it an amazing afternoon for himself and the club after scoring both of Latics’ goals in this crucial victory at The Pirelli Stadium. Not even he could have dreamt it would have gone that well."
"A cagey first half in which the hosts had more possession but the best chances fell to Latics was drawing to a close when Connolly popped up from nowhere to head home Stephen Warnock’s looped cross from the left hand side, and send the Latics fans massed directly behind the goal into raptures; it was probably the first time he had ventured into the area but gambled as Latics pushed up-field deep into injury time; and what a decision it proved to be."
"Connolly stole into the box on 64 minutes to nod in Jacobs’ right wing corner past Bywater to double the lead and cap off a truly remarkable debut for the 19 year-old."

Got his own article on the Wigan site...
"I can’t really describe how today made me feel; we knew it was going to be a six-pointer and the gaffer reminded us of that in the changing rooms before the game. It is all a bit of a blur but I got on the end of Stevie’s cross for the first goal and luckily it went in. It was a great feeling celebrating in front of the fans where my family were too. I heard my new song after the goal in the second-half and it gave me a great boost of confidence."
"I got the call up on Thursday morning, I shot down the motorway, had a couple of days of preparation with the lads and settled in well - the lads and gaffer have been great with me. The gaffer was at United last season and he has seen a lot of me in the last couple of seasons and liked me so I am just glad that I performed on my debut. I would like to think of myself as a versatile and hard-working player who just wants to do well for the team."

Lots of positive comments from manager, teammates and fans
"Wigan manager Warren Joyce had this to say: He’s a player I’ve known about for a long time. Obviously when you are looking at the make-up of players and looking at their attributes and qualities, we are not a big side and it’s important in this league that you have got full-backs that can head the ball as well. Every credit to the kid today, enthusiasm and bravery gets us the points."

Fan blog article about Callum

Luke Garbutt was not in Wigan matchday squad (back injury).

League Two
Doncaster Rovers - Conor Grant started and played full match in 3-1 away win over Barnet

OS Match Report

Twitter stuff
16' Rovers breakaway through Marquis and Grant. Marquis gets a shot on goal but his low effort is straight at Vickers 1-0
37' Vilhete is up highest to clear a Conor Grant corner 1-3

No particular fan comments about him.

I watched Connolly's goals on the Championship Goals programme, as shown by LL above. Have to say they were typical of him. They showed a bit more of the first goal, he's up there in the box finding space, then when the attack falters a bit he goes out of shot , finds space again and comes back into the box to make what looks like a simple headed goal. The second one with him getting up between two defenders to direct the corner into the net is something I can recall him doing at least twice for our u21s/23s. It's no fluke, it's what he can do, the question has always been yes he can do it at age level can he do it against good standard adults. I won't be bothered if he doesn't score again, main job now is to get experience at Championship level and keep showing he's the most versatile young defender we've got.

Premiership
Brendan Galloway was not in WBA match day squad. According to papers, Tony Pulis is refusing to cancel the season loan because he 'wants to keep him as back-up'.

Championship
Barnsley - Gethin Jones played full match in 3-2 home win over Leeds United

OS Match Report

Twitter stuff
26 - Gethin Jones clears the header from Wood off the line and it goes for another.
41 - Gethin Jones is brought down as he approaches the area. Free-kick to Reds, looks like Kent to take.

Fan comment
"Gethin Jones looked a bit uncomfortable at times on the left side, particularly tackling on his left side which is more difficult for a right sided left full back, but he is fresh to the club and probably does not understand our play yet."

Wigan Athletic - Callum Connolly started and played full match in 2-1 home win over Brentford

OS Match Report
"Connolly came close to making it a home debut to remember after he was the unlikely hero at Burton last week, meeting Michael Jacobs’ 15th minute corner from the right with a good header which the referee judged had gone out of play before Daniel Bentley got finger tips to it. He had a second chance after 22 minutes, meeting Stephen Warnock’s deep cross but the angle was tight and he could only head straight at Bentley."

Twitter stuff
15' - CHANCE! Callum Connolly - him again - heads a Michael Jacobs corner from the right just over. Close...(0-0)
21' CHANCE - Connolly again, this time heads straight at Bentley from Steve Warnock's deep cross from the left - boy's on fire! (0-0)

Fan comment
"Connolly and Haugaard have been great finds."

League Two
Doncaster Rovers - Conor Grant played full match and scored in 3-1 home win over Crewe Alexandra

OS Match Report
"Darren Ferguson’s side’s pressure paid off moments later as Everton loanee Conor Grant thumped Rovers into the lead.
Some good work from Tommy Rowe saw the ball fall to Grant 18-yards out, and he lashed his right-footed effort into the bottom-left of Garratt’s goal."
"Rovers went back in front after 56 minutes. A whipped free-kick from Grant picked out Marquis who has lost his marker to head his 15th goal of the Sky Bet League Two season."

Twitter stuff
22' Neat footwork from Rowe on the edge of the box and eventually the ball falls to Conor Grant who fires home right footed. 1-0
56' Brilliant set piece delivery from Grant meets the head of Marquis who scores his 15th goal of the season! 2-1

No particular fan comments as yet.

Other News
Delial Brewster and Luke Garbutt both injured at the moment.
Morecambe's game was postponed but Antony Evans made a video for the club:

I didn't know that Evans had gone out. He seemed to score a lot of goals for the youth team last year but haven't heard as much about him this year. Will be interesting to see how he goes in senior football.

Nice to see Gethin Jones getting game time, this quote made me think.
"Gethin Jones looked a bit uncomfortable at times on the left side, particularly tackling on his left side which is more difficult for a right sided left full back, but he is fresh to the club and probably does not understand our play yet."

Connolly is so comfortable on the left after years of practise, as well as the right.
