Nice to see Gethin Jones getting game time, this quote made me think.
"Gethin Jones looked a bit uncomfortable at times on the left side, particularly tackling on his left side which is more difficult for a right sided left full back, but he is fresh to the club and probably does not understand our play yet."

Connolly is so comfortable on the left after years of practise, as well as the right.

...I watched a large part of that game yesterday to take a look at Jones. He did ok. Leeds are on a real roll and it was a difficult debut being a frantic Derby but he didn't let anybody down. Great win for Barnsley.

Quote from Barnsley manager regarding Jones yesterday:

I thought he did excellent, I’m really, really pleased with him. We brought him in predominantly as a right-back but we know he has got that cover.

“With Aidy coming back from injury and playing 120 minutes on Tuesday night, we have to be very organised in our thinking because at the minute, we only have two full-backs.

“We have three with Gethin and we have to keep him fit and that’s just decision you have to make when you carry a small squad.

“You think someone can deal with something and he has shown tonight that he can and there is a lot more to come from him.”

Everton youngster Callum Connolly has been labelled a “credit to Everton Football Club” after impressing Wigan boss Warren Joyce while on loan there.

Connolly scored a brace on his debut for the Latics, but Joyce says his defensive displays have also been worthy of praise.

The 19 year old defensive midfielder has represented England at Under 20 level and Joyce says he has a big career in front of him.

“Obviously I’ve known about him for a while and he’s a credit to Everton Football Club,” Joyce said.

“They’re the ones who have developed him and he’s capable of having a long career in the Premier League.

“I thought Callum was outstanding (against Brentford); defensively he was sound in a situation where he opened it up down his side of the pitch.

“He’s a credit to Everton Football Club; they’ve put the work into his development and we have just selected him and given him the opportunity to play.”

Jonjoe Kenny too I think. I remember a game in the U17 euros against Portugal where our LB (not sure why Connolly wasn't involved, may have been injured) was getting roasted. The manager took him off and switched Kenny from RB to deal with him. literally never got another kick for the rest of the game.

Some great comments there from Wigan's manager, nice to see he shares Unsworth's view on him. Can't ask for more than that on loan. Let's hope he keeps up the good work.

He's such a versatile player. Can play anywhere across the back 4 or as a defensive midfielder. He's genuinely 2 footed, extremely composed in possession, and manages to get himself into great scoring positions which indicates good intelligence too. Despite all this he tends to float through games almost unnoticed. Very underestimated in my view.

As regards his prospects with us, I'm not sure if this versatility will actually work against him as he doesn't really have a specialist position. I suppose LB has been his most common role.

Does anyone know what position he has played for Wigan?

right back.

he was doing his gcses i think
Yeah, I remember him returning for England a few months later, think they were u18s then , and scoring two goals on his debut. He's not the most outrageously talented of our " Golden Generation" but he's my favourite.
I'm hoping he plays in the FACup next week against Man U, I'm presuming he's not cup tied , anybody know?
