Matthew Pennington might be the answer at central defence for Leeds United

On loan Everton starlet shines in Elland Road debut

The final preseason game was the first time that many Leeds United fans got a good chance to see many of the new players in action against for an extended period of time. While much of the focus has been on the new attacking players that the team has brought in, one of the standout performers of the preseason win against Oxford United was the new loanee from Everton, Matthew Pennington.

Pennington played three games for Everton in the Premier League last year, including starting at CB, and scoring, in the Mersyside derby against Liverpool. Now while he was sent out on loan after he he moved further down the depth chart at Everton, after Everton purchased Michael Keane from Burnley, he has already shown glimpses of the talent that made him a highly regarded prospect for the blue half of Merseyside and why Leeds were so keen to bring him in on loan.

Paired with Liam Cooper in central defence, likely because of the suspension of Pontus Jansson, Pennington was thrown out without a net against Oxford. He had a shaky moment to begin the game, with an ill advised back-pass to the new goalkeeper from Werder Bremen, Felix Wiedwald, but after a few minutes, he seemed to settle down and got into the flow of the game.

Pennington made two fantastic tackles in the game while on an island against Oxford forwards, while playing well most of the game, helping to ensure a clean sheet in the team’s debut at Elland Road this season. While Christiansen has hinted that the team might be interested in going after a few more new players during the summer transfer window, and the club has been linked in the press with a number of central defenders, as of right now, Pennington is it. And he’s got pretty big boots to fill, as it appears that Kyle Bartley will not be leaving Swansea City for a return to Leeds United, no matter how much the fans want him back.

The display against Oxford will have helped make Pennington’s case to be in the starting lineup against Bolton Wanderers on Sunday, as without Jansson the backline has a number of questions. But for now, it appears that Pennington has one half of the CB partnership down against Bolton, if he keeps it once Jansson gets back is another story.

Would hardly be a good lesson for him, if he played him when he doesn't earn the spot.

Was being a little funny, but you would like to think we got assurances that he would play. If not, then is this the right loan move for him? Having him play cup games and come on a sub isn't really what we were hoping for I'd imagine.

Oh don't think there are any assurances. Anderlecht never gives them. Last year they loaned Thelin; hardly played. Etc. If you want to play you have to perform simple as that.

Atm Hanni is a better player than him (and also the team captain). Hanni normally plays as a CAM though; but because the team has too much good central midfielders they have pushed him out wide. The other side is Chipciu, also quite decent. Theodorczyk is playing badly again, but I think he refuses to use him (Henry) as a (sole) striker since he pushed on another one (Ganvoula). Maybe the coach will decide a change of formation or something in the season.

One thing's for sure though; he'll have to make an impression in the minutes he gets. That and he'll also get his chances when the CL starts again; he usually plays with a very different team the match before a CL match. Also against Antwerp, I think originally he was intended to play, because he had him warming up during the entire match.

..I like him, looks classy. It does leave us a bit light in the LB position which suggests Connolly is not part of the Sigurdsson deal.

I've just mentioned in the Transfer Thread, I wonder if we're close to signing cover for lb/cb, with Robinson going out on loan. You'd have to think so as we were pretty bare bones beforehand.

Getting good quality loans this time around.

Suspect Walsh will go out too if he recovers from his injury before the end of the transfer window.

Quite often when we see lads going out on loan the real intention is to help them find their next club, I think this can sometimes be particularly true when the loans are to first and second division teams... not always but certainly sometimes.

Young players being loaned out to good standard championship clubs are playing for their future at Everton.
I think this is true of Pennington, Browning, Dowell, Galloway to name just four. I believe that no firm decision is made about them as yet and how they perform will help to make a decision.
If Kenny is to be loaned out as well and this is not certain, I would not be surprised if it wasn't to another premiership team. I think thatmaybe Dowell and Kenny are expected to make the grade but are not ready yet.

Six players out (so far) at Championship level clubs and one at a prominent European club - definitely been a step up in the level of the loans this year.

...you're reports are going to be even more fascinating than ever, that's something to have 6 on loan at Championship level.

Galloway and Browning start for Sunderland. Americans can watch this game, as ESPN is streaming this it online via ESPN 3/Watch ESPN. Full replay should be available as well.

Dowell in the squad but as a sub.
