Why don't we recall Pennington? He can't be worse than what we have.
No one of course can be recalled before the January transfer window, and that’s assuming that we have done what all sensible clubs would do and inserted a “Recall Clause”. So let’s not bank on that.
Pennngton has been an used sub for Leeds lately including today, so not a great recommendation to bring him back . Tyias Browning played CB for Sunderland today and if he continues at least he’ll be match fit.
Reality is that come January our new manager will be bringing in his own centre half(s) , and both Pennington and Browning will be playing for their futures in the Championship.

..agree. If we have entitlement for recalls, you have to think Onyekuru and Dowell will be top of the list. From a defensive perspective, perhaps the boy at Ipswich would give some realistic versatility, especially as cover for Baines.

Saying that, I don’t know if we have the power of recall.

Championship
Barnsley - Joe Williams played full match in 0-2 home defeat to Leeds United

OS Match Report
"Joe Williams lashed a volley well wide in response but other than a few crosses from free-kicks and corners, one that saw Liam Lindsay glance a header wide, it was a tough half of football for Reds supporters, and it ended in hurtful fashion when Leeds doubled their lead."
"Five minutes later and Williams again tried his luck from range and on the volley, but found the Ponty End."

Twitter stuff
32 - Williams strikes one wide from 25 yards out as the Reds look to find an equaliser here.
59 - Williams hits a volley well over and wide from the edge.

Fan comments
"Tom (?) Williams and Harvey Barnes, who for me are normally in another class looked like a couple of rabbits caught in the headlights."
"Joe Williams certainly didn't seem to turn up."
"For me Williams gets in the right position to pick up loose balls and make a tackle to break up an attack but his distribution is then awful, really awful, he usually ends up giving it back to the opposition, he needs to sort that out"
"He'l probably become a decent player but the fact hes stand out performer in a championship team is more to do with how poor the rest are."

(I caught a fair amount of this match and thought he did OK in what was a poor Barnsley performance where they were physically bullied by a Leeds side who seemed to have sorted out the referee beforehand. A bit Davies-lite - as per comments above, decent enough when breaking up play and picking up loose balls, less good when looking at what to do with it or having the ball nicked off him.)

Ipswich Town - Callum Connolly played full match and was booked in 0-2 away defeat at Aston Villa

OS Match Report

Twitter stuff
28' Callum Connolly left in a heap on the ground after going up for a header with Josh Onomah. The doctors are on, but he appears to be OK.
56' Callum Connolly booked for Town for dragging Onomah to the floor as he looked to break away.

Fan comments
"Skuse very comfortable in his customary 'safety mode' and offering no support whatsoever for the strikers and Connolly not doing better."
"Connolly was outmuscled."
"I like the fact that Connolly is getting some game time but it would be good to see him at right back."

Sunderland - Tyias Browning played full match in 2-0 away win at Burton Albion

OS Match Report

No real comments about him.

Bolton Wanderers - Antonee Robinson played full match in 1-5 away defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers

OS Match Report
"But Wolves increased their lead on 62 minutes when Cavaleiro sent his spot kick past Alnwick after Robinson upended Romain Saiss."

Twitter stuff
The ball falls kindly to @Antonee_Jedi in space on the edge of the box. He takes a touch before lining up the strike only to see his effort blocked. (25)
.@Antonee_Jedi tries his luck from 30 yards after controlling Darren Pratley's lay-off. It's a tame strike, straight at John Ruddy. (38)
.@Antonee_Jedi has only Gary Madine in support as he sprints down the right wing, shrugging off three challenges before playing it back to Sammy Ameobi. (48)
Penalty to Wolves after @Antonee_Jedi trips Romain Saiss in the box. Ivan Cavaleiro to take... (61)
.@Beeves16 and @Antonee_Jedi are both wrong-footed by a swift Wolves counter-attack before Ben Alnwick saves well with his feet from Helder Costa. (73)

Fan comments
"If there was a MOM it was Robinson."

League Two
Crewe Alexandra - Conor Grant started and was substituted in the 72nd minute of a 1-2 home defeat by Luton Town

OS Match Report
"Then from a free-kick won by Conor Grant down the right hand side, Cooper’s delivery just couldn’t quite reach Brad Walker at the far post."

Brendan Galloway and Matthew Pennington were both unused subs yesterday.

I saw bits of Barnsley/ Leeds too and thought Williams was ok in a poorly performing team. I would agree about the fans’ comment on his distribution, a couple of times he got himself free in midfield but failed to deliver an effective through ball to set up an attack. Hopefully it’ll come ,but that’s what is required of him at PL level, not just a big heart and lungs and plenty of effort.

I saw the Wolves/ Bolton penalty and it looked to me that it was Robinson who committed the foul but the tv guy said another name. Bolton are a poor team , hope he can continue to get starts , tough though the experience is.

I think another factor for a number of them is realising just how much they need to muscle/bulk up and to use their body weight to be able to play at Championship level and above. Over the seasons, there are consistent comments about players being pushed off the ball, having the ball taken off them, etc., and it's probably been the case with Robinson, Connolly, Williams and Dowell at certain points this season, despite the fact that they might be doing well at other aspects of their development.

Some of that might be down to them getting used to the fact that everyone is a lot better and faster than their usual U23/18 team-mates and competition but some of it is down to consistent training and learning how to use your body.

Of course, they are still young lads who may well be doing some growing - would be interesting to hear from anyone involved in training at what point they are expected to concentrate on upper body strength/bulk (without hopefully sounding too much like Purple Aki).

Well the only positive of this season so far is that

Pickford
Kenny
Keane
Funes Mori
Robinson
Williams/Baningime
Davies/Connolly/Walsh
Dowell
Vlasic
DCL
Henry/Lookman

Should take the Championship by storm next year

In the past I watched a lot of U18/U20s International rugby and , ignoring the forwards, it always amazed me the strength and bulk the “ puny” backs had without losing speed - they didn’t have a chance otherwise in the modern game. So it’s certainly possible to add muscle strength and retain pace. I’m a puny runner waiting for a knee operation so have started “ Strength “ training twice a week , knee press , bench press, deadlift. I’ll apparently get stronger but won’t put on body mass because of the running. It’s all to do with one set of training being anabolic which builds muscle mass and the other , running, being catabolic which reduces body mass, that’s a very simplistic explanation. Given the amount of sports scientists involved I’m sure they tailor training programmes for each individual, we just may not see it in their body shape, although some like Tyias Browning do seem noticeably bigger. Some like Joe Gomez looked a beast in his U17 days compared to Connolly and Kenny at the time and will always be bigger. Your point about learning to use your body is a good one, that’s hopefully what the loans will develop.

Anderlecht won 4-0.

Onyekuru was on the receiving end of some criticism though. It basically comes down to that he's playing too selfish (and nonchalant after the early lead), you could already see it during the game the manager kept waving his arms towards him.

"Henry should stop thinking that his performances are solely judged upon goals. He is allowed to take on opponents, but the sum of his dribbles should be positive after 90 minutes. Not negative, like now. Especially when he's in acres of space and has little opposition, like against Kortrijk, he should avoid easy loss of the ball. Yes, last week against Moeskroen he scored the winning goal, but I expect more of him".

Thanks for the updates on this lad
