With the end of the Championship it's virtually the end of the loans, so here is a quick rundown of the best and worst of most of the coverage - not necessarily my opinions but my view of the local fans' opinions:
Callum Connolly
At best - excelled in midfield and popped up with some very Coleman-esque goals
At worst - couldn't nail down a permanent spot as managers struggled. Often not used in his 'correct' position'.
Overall, imo, one of the most successful of the loans.
Kieran Dowell
At best - ran matches, scored spectacular goals and seemed a class or two better than players around him.
At worst - disappeared from sight as games passed him by. Played on the wing rather than in favoured central midfield.
Also a positive loan, but it remains for him to turn his undoubted potential at loan and first team level into a consistent choice on the team sheet.
Joe Williams
At best - was midfield destroyer and unexpectedly astute on ball.
At worst - was overrun in midfield and lost possession in crucial areas with misplaced passes. Injury cut loan short.
Proved his mettle at Championship level but needs to take yet another step to compete in central EFC midfield position crowded with experience and other rival young players.
Antonee Robinson
At best - was attacking force with dangerous crosses from left wing.
At worst - lacking defensive discipline and experience allowed opponents to take advantage. Played a lot as left wingback/left midfield as opposed to 'natural' left back position.
Good loan but mixed performances. Doubtful whether he can make an immediate impact on first team and another loan may beckon.
Matthew Pennington
At best - steady member of Championship defence with some vital interceptions
At worst - slow to turn and beaten by Championship level attackers
Although he is a personal favourite, difficult to see him in the first team unless as backup cover until alternatives come through. At 23, getting to age where he needs to make a decision as well.
Ademola Lookman
At best - matchwinning performances in competitive European league
At worst - ineffective and initially unable to impress manager
One for the future but will he be happy to stay or agitate for a move?
Tyias Browning
At best - steady performance in team in nightmare season
At worst - equally responsible for some shambolic defensive performances
Again, age may well factor into his future but seems to have not reached level expected of him by some at the club. Injury has not helped.
Loanees Brendan Galloway, Harry Charsley and Louis Gray hardly featured, probably for individual reasons.
It should be remembered that some youth players have had poor loans and turned those into international careers, whereas other star on loan and then end up as a squad player lower down the leagues.
