No way was Rooney a top 20 bad signing. He ended the season our top scorer despite allardyce playing him holding mid for 6 months! He wasn't even a top 5 bad signing from that season.
Going back a long time ago one of the worst players I have ever seen was Rod Belfitt. Harry Catterick must have been on crack cocaine to have bought him.

Simon Davies. A player we didn't need was our big summer signing in 2005 for £4.5m when we'd just finished 4th. Surely we could've attracted better?
Leon Osman played in a similar position and was a far better player yet he was benched for this waster from Spurs. Davies was a huge whipping boy during his 18 months here and flogged for half what we paid for him.

I think the main lesson to be learned, especially in recent times,is not to buy castoff squad players from "big" teams. They want a massive wage and are usually demotivated as they've missed their chance at the big time. There are obviously exceptions to this rule but the likes of Siggurdson, Schneiderlin, Walcott, Iwobi etc are the reason why we're in the financial mess we're in.
