Confirmed Signing Youssef Chermiti

….a few of us have made the point re Gyokeres and it’s very fair. You wonder why they signed him if they had this kid on their conveyer belt. I wasn’t keen on us signing Gyokeres, I like him but thought top flight defenders would be comfortable marking him.

All we can hope for is that Chermiti game might suit the PL more & he can develop past Gyokeres. Chermiti is the type of player we should be acquiring but ultimately they have to be good enough to improve us and only time will tell us that. We can judge Thelwell at the end of the season on this purchase.
Yeah I agree with this. I know we have said we wanted us to identify youngsters so we can develop them, but the two areas of doubt in my mind around this particular purchase is…

1) we do really need someone for right now, so if this is meant to be an investment for the future, it may turn out to be a decent buy only if he a) turns out good and b) we do buy someone for right now, and…

2) their purchase of Gyokeres indicates to me they wanted someone for right now, and they didn’t think this kid could deliver on what they wanted. For these two reasons, whilst this is the type of our chase we have broadly said we wanted, I have some reservations about the rationale of buying this kid.

Dyche is the only noise coming direct from the club, so I would think he is managing fan expectations and not alerting any others who may want to compete for any signings we are trying to make. I suspect Dyche is being cautious with his words.
Yup. They absolutely are working hard behind the scenes and his talk is smoke screen. We could have had three announcements 5mins after that interview

We are buying Chermiti because he has attributes like DCL

We also bought DCL age 19

season 1 some sub minutes
season 2 some starts out of position, some subs, few goals
season 3 more starts, some in position, a couple more goals
season 4, 5 core starter in position, double digit goals both years
then the injury bug!

If we have more managerial stability and a clearer plan than we initially had with DCL we might shave 12-18 months off this trajectory best case with Chermiti but we do need to have realistic expectations this year and next.

Obviously we need a bridging solution who is not expensive, happy to rotate off bench but able to hold down some starts if DCL is out but we also need to use Chermiti off the bench when circumstances permit. It is a tricky balance.

Oh but we were in that bracket.

That was Neal Maupay’s stats before he joined us.

Anyone that we can afford that fits the “proven” category, is a risk. Otherwise, why are the other team selling? (See Maupay) At least with younger players, they have an upside and could at least increase in value for a resale.
As I said I can't disagree with the idea but all I can say again is that we aren't in the position to have the time to develop young players. Any striker is a gamble we bought a dud in Maupay. The lad Día could be the same or score 15+ it's a real game with real players not FM. How many strikers would guarantee 15+ per season and what would they cost? Can we shop in that market?

We have some movement on Chermiti this week which will give us a boost to the squad especially with McNeil out for a period and Danjuma still with a niggle.

Gray transfer will surely be sorted after we play Fulham plus we have recent links in Grotto or Sulemana who are excellent attacking options plus a defensive midfielder in Martinez.

We still have Gbamin, Gomes, Holgate and possibly Maupay to ship out but if we are honest they don't directly effect out starting XI.

It's not ideal window but we all know the restrictions and budget we are working with especially with the new stadium.

The likelihood is we are going to be wheeling and dealing until the end of the window unless we can ship out one of our duds for big Saudi money.
