Beer, revisited

Some of the brews with high price points might face a difficult time. I don't feel it is appropriate for me to be buying some of the beers I normally would do. Just doesn't feel right. I am sure there will be many coming to similar conclusions.

I think wild beer went wrong with how they did things. It was either supermarket beer on very small margins or pricier mixed ferm/BA stouts.

Not much in between.

I've stopped buying more expensive beers out really, not worth the risk more of the time

My local, which has always done it`s level best, to keep it`s prices down, due to the amount of old boys that drink in there, has had to put it`s beer up by 80p a pint, just to stand still.

They communicated the reasons for doing it to everyone beforehand, so it hasn`t made any difference, as everyone understands and is supportive.

You`ve got to fear, for pubs, where their custom comes from visitors though.

I mean affordability has to come into it unfortunately and like it or not beer is a luxury item, albeit one I cut back in other areas to continue it as part of my lifestyle.

I used to go the pub for the footy and guzzle crap lagers. I don't bother anymore and watch from home.

I still enjoy going out on my own to places that do real ale etc and do this a couple of times a week however only have 2 pints usually. My wife doesn't drink so is happy anywhere that does a coffee.

If I'm meeting friends then we go Spoons. They earn less than I do so can't afford premium and to be honest I can't be doing sessions at 6 quid a pop for a pint when you can get a good pint of bitter or something in Spoons for 2.50.

In an ideal world I'd be supporting local and small businesses with every beer I drink but this is the best way I've found currently to maintain a social and financial balance.

With a bit of research, you can always avoid paying stupid prices.

Even in London, there`s still places like the Sam Smiths pubs, where you can get a really decent beer, in a lovely old pub, for a reasonable price.

I can see a lot of Pubco run pubs shutting up though.

London was a lot cheaper for me than where I am in Bristol and I've researched practically everywhere in the district ha.

I used to drink regularly at a Portuguese bar in Tooting market, 3.50 a pint. No chance getting a similar pint at same near mine.

Spending the weekend in NOVA (= northern Virginia, basically near DC) and across the street from our hotel is Fair Winds brewery. This is a decent IPA, very grape-fruity but in a good wayView attachment 194613
It’s been a while since I’ve been to Lorton, but there used to be a massive prison there. I was told “You never pick up hitchhikers in Lorton.” Believe that they redeveloped the land into townhouses after closing it

We head up to Lorton/Springfield area quite a bit as my partner's elderly father lives in Greenspring Senior Living Center. We tend to stay at the Embassy Suites, which is right next to the brewery. Didn't know about the prison...but happy to hear it's no longer around.

I gotcha. That area has grown considerably over the past 20 years.
Here’s an article about the redevelopment if you’re interested:

Personally I would be scared out of my mind for the bad juju.

On topic, had some delicious local beers from Black Flag Brewing (Columbia, MD) at the neighborhood pub watching the US/Iran game last week

I think the 'london is more expensive' thing is a bit of a myth. People moan about the price of a pint of peroni in a sky top bar overlooking Westminster. What do they expect? Any place with a view in most cities will be more expensive.

Day to day pubs are more or less the same as every other major city

York centre is another bad one for sky high prices - unless you know where to go, outside of Spoons.
