Redundancy help

Where I work they offer a months redundancy pay for every year you've worked at the company. If you've been there a while and have transferable skills to be able to get another job then it might be worth taking.
If you're one of the ones to volunteer to go, you might be able to negotiate with them. Get a years salary and it gives you plenty of time to find another source of income.

Hi all,

Has anyone been through redundancy before? I am in a team of 5 that they need to cut down to a team of 3. They have said they want 2 people to take voluntary redundancy or we have to start a desktop screen process next week. Basically got told today. People have until tomorrow to tell the company if they are willing to take voluntary redundancy. If not they will score us via some matrix and let us know on Monday who is for the chop. We will be gone on 30th of November. It all seems abit rushed. Is this normal and ok process? Nobody in the team had an inkling this would be happening. Also our manager is getting the hook and he was unaware.

I’m not apart of a union and only have a months notice to give so does that mean am fooked?

Might need to set up a gofundme page to solve my Bucky and tennants needs @COYBL25
Sounds a bit wrong that, I know what I'd say to them, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Hope everything works out for you

Shame there isn't a discreet hotline that can be utilised to alert the federales. 24 hours to consider yourself for the off? Nah, underhand.

Funniest thing is, I get paid 08:30-16:30. Get no overtime. Been helping out this week by working in Newcastle(puke). Starting at 06:30 and finishing gone 6. Nobody asked me to but done that to help out.

Fook em. Back to quiet quitting. Milk them for all I can.

If my big boss is on here, you can suck my baws you tory.

Yeh that’s the plan anyway. Even if they keep me, I will probably look to move on. Don’t like the way this has happened
The last 2 jobs I had I was made redundant.

It sucks, it really does, both times the companies folded a few months after, so I have no complaints really.

Can I join a union or is it too late?
Not sure what a Union can do mate.

My Father in law works for Unite, so my Wife is with them, touch wood we havent had any issues, but honestly, unless the whole place is in the same Union, there would seem very little they can do.

Sorry to hear you've been put into this position. As others of said you need to find out what an offer is, they could just give you basic redundancy anyhow and just be looking for someone to volunteer who might have been ready to leave anyhow to make their decision easier. If they are a nice company though they might pay you more on top for volunteering.

If you like the group you work with it might be an idea as a whole to find out the offer and workout between you who is better suited to stay who might take the money and get another job. This can fall apart when it is a sinking ship and every man for themselves but if you approach it as mates at least to begin with it doesn't pick out an individual that went to check what kind of redundancy is on offer on their own and therefore shows you would be at least tempted to leave.

If you've been putting in extra hours whilst others haven't and are on the same money or less it could well be that they would want to continue anyhow. As long as the others aren't massive brown noses that tends to go far in my experience.

Best of luck whatever happens.

Here's the legal position on compulsory redundancy. As you can see it is age dependant and this is the minimum you should get.

Voluntary redundancy terms should be better- because they want you to go.
Ask to see their redundancy policy - they should have one. Why are they making your team redundant ? Has your job disappeared? Is it loss making? They should offer you alternative employment if it is available. Your employer should also have had an open and transparent selection procedure for redundancy. The ACAS guidance is really good.
