Redundancy help

Hi all,

Has anyone been through redundancy before? I am in a team of 5 that they need to cut down to a team of 3. They have said they want 2 people to take voluntary redundancy or we have to start a desktop screen process next week. Basically got told today. People have until tomorrow to tell the company if they are willing to take voluntary redundancy. If not they will score us via some matrix and let us know on Monday who is for the chop. We will be gone on 30th of November. It all seems abit rushed. Is this normal and ok process? Nobody in the team had an inkling this would be happening. Also our manager is getting the hook and he was unaware.

I’m not apart of a union and only have a months notice to give so does that mean am fooked?

Might need to set up a gofundme page to solve my Bucky and tennants needs @COYBL25
Sorry to hear this.

Few years back was part of a team that went through that. As I remember there was about a week between being told there would be redundancies and the unlucky ones getting told they'd been selected. Nobody had a clue what was coming and they all left on the day they were told. Don't know what they got financially but it was a grim time generally. One guy left voluntarily and he seemed OK, for the rest, what had been a friendly team socially got a bit awkward as people dealt with the fall out.

Hope it works out for you whichever way it goes.

I think there has to be a consultation period dependant upon company size. Anyway the country is desperate for decent staff, if offer is good then take it. If they are downsizing they are on the slide anyway.

I had something similar couple of years back, I had worked for 15 years for a jewellery merchandiser looking after the Stands in Bhs, Tesco, Mataln and Phillip Greens Arcadia shops . After Lockdown all his shops went so my firm had to cut staff. So they could pick out who they wanted to get rid of we had to answer questions on some sort of Zoom set up. I had no idea how to do this so I wrote the answers on a piece of paper, photographed them and sent them through email. Not surprising I got picked. Took me 12 months to get any sort of job which I was made redundant from after 9 months and now I'm about to be made redundant from my latest job.
If only they had left retirement age at 60 I wouldn't have to go through this constant worry.
Good luck to what ever the out come xx

I'm not familiar with UK employment law, so it's hard to say. But in most countries, there is a bare minimum threshold companies have to meet in terms of notice and severance package that might seem pretty unfair. I've heard of plenty of fantastic severance packages, but at the end of the day they are at company discretion.

You need to find out two things:

1. What is the severance package. Contact every HR stooge in the place until you get an answer. They can't expect you to make a decision like this without that info

2. What your rights are: People have posted links here, but I think gathering all the information you can get right now and calling Citizen's Information on the phone is the quickest and best way of getting advice. We're all just guessing here

Can I ask what industry is? How would you gauge your employability?

Sad news.
What sort of job you looking for?
Maybe someone on this forum could help or point you, only if you needed, of course

Went through it twice mate. Used to work resi schools for kids in care. Lost my job twice in 12 months to school closures. In my experience the first wave of redundancies went through quick. I had to tell half the work force they had lost their jobs because the high ups didn’t have the bottle to do it.

It was awful, plus we had the kids in amongst it. All I’ll say is try to hang on til the end for the redundancy pay out. We had a few jump ship before and lost thousands.
