Redundancy help

Not open for further replies.
Hi all,

Has anyone been through redundancy before? I am in a team of 5 that they need to cut down to a team of 3. They have said they want 2 people to take voluntary redundancy or we have to start a desktop screen process next week. Basically got told today. People have until tomorrow to tell the company if they are willing to take voluntary redundancy. If not they will score us via some matrix and let us know on Monday who is for the chop. We will be gone on 30th of November. It all seems abit rushed. Is this normal and ok process? Nobody in the team had an inkling this would be happening. Also our manager is getting the hook and he was unaware.

I’m not apart of a union and only have a months notice to give so does that mean am fooked?

Might need to set up a gofundme page to solve my Bucky and tennants needs @COYBL25
Unless they're paying mega dosh, remember the golden rule - Never Volunteer

If your card is marked...as is sometimes the case, and your face doesn't fit, dig your heels in and try to make them pay as much as you can.
Get an official Rep involved if you can.

I took redundancy from a job I was very comfortable in a year and a half ago. I got one week pay for every year I’d served and then it was enhanced by 75%, plus they paid three months notice as well, so all in all it was a tidy sum. I immediately went into the jobs market and was surprised at how many vacancies there were. In the end I took a job with the NHS and I really love my new job. But for me the biggest fear was leaving my comfort zone and stepping out into the unknown. And even though the process of opting for redundancy was on the table for about two months, when I made the decision and signed the papers I was off their systems within 48 hours, with the whole financial package emailed to me. That probably doesn’t help you that much, but I guess that I’m trying to say that it could be a blessing in disguise.

Can I join a union or is it too late?
A union won't represent you on an existing issue but they may be willing to advise you - depends on the union. I've known some point blank refuse to discuss anything with someone who hasn't been a member long enough. 4 weeks is the usual period. A colleague of mine joined EFWU with an existing issue and they gave him really good advice and support.

If any of your affected colleagues are members of trade unions you could join their union, you'll probably get the same representation at any meetings but you won't have legal cover should things progress that far. If you've got a mortgage you might be covered through that for employment law issues, worth checking.

Also you can run everything by ACAS, it's a free employment advice service and definitely worth a phone call.

Good luck with it, I hope you all get as favourable an outcome as you can.

Time to take out all the blackmail info you've been saving. Good luck, in this job or the next!

Very rushed isn’t it. That’s my major question. Granted I only have a months notice period but they told us today on the 2nd Nov and said the 2 people leaving will be gone by 30th.
They will pay up on that month - plus if it's the Government's Redundancy scheme it's a poor pay-out try any Union to take you on if you join ASAP even backdate your membership - I have known it to be done ;)

100% agree with this. Was the best career move i ever made. Went from working split shifts with alternate work schedules between Monday - Sunday to Monday - Friday flexi time.

Moved 2 and a half years ago and have got 2 big promotions since then so lots of opportunities to develop, atleast where i am.
I changed 6 years ago.. I love it, Monday to Friday, half day Friday... I'm still on the pay scale so I've been getting 3 pay increases a year.

thanks all. Boss information.

Anyone fancy offering me a job? Experience in diving submarines and rating fridges. Bit niche but am sure they’re transferable skills.
Next job join a Trade Union or try & get in one ASAP - if it's a small firm they do not need to know as you pay by D/Debit - my son was in a small firm's van got smashed up the back the firm claimed on all the repairs of the van & because there is less than ten workers were not obliged to fight for his whiplash -

He told the GMB - Thats correct - small firms are exempt - you can use our solicitors EAD in Liverpool came out with 4 grand - he was really injured - they claimed physio sessions etc loss of earnings etc - the top boss now knows he is in a Union - never bothers him ....

A lot of unions prefer members who work for big companies/councils etc to pay by direct debit these days rather than check off (deducted from wages) because then the employer can't be sure how many of their staff the union is speaking on behalf of. They can inflate their membership in any collective consultations/negotiations and employers hate this coz they've got no way of disproving it.
