Tax and National Insurance

If you’re made redundant, you may get a ‘termination payment’. This could include:
  • statutory redundancy pay
  • holiday pay
  • unpaid wages
  • company benefits, for example bonuses
Statutory redundancy pay under £30,000 is not taxable.
The person I know got taxed on £4, 500 .....& they had Union representation ? The measly government Redundancy was not taxed but holidays & unpaid wages were .....

So it looks like it works this way.
  • statutory redundancy pay - not taxed up to £30,000
  • holiday pay - taxed
  • unpaid wages - taxed
  • company benefits, for example bonuses - taxed
You would have to be on a fantastic salary to get £30,000 redundancy - & have been at the place of employment for approximately around 40 years ..... they have in scaled too as I remember a weeks pay for the first ten years etc ..... then 1 & 1/2 for the next 5 or ten years - 2 weeks after that - it may have changed like ......

My Trade Union worked it out for me & advised me to fight my case as it was peanuts & I had 25 years in on a good salary ....

I found this as well:
The maximum amount of statutory redundancy pay you can be entitled to overall is £19,290, while the length of service you'll be paid for is capped at 20 years. These statutory caps are reviewed every year on 6 April.

However, you might get more than the minimum amount the law says you should get ('statutory'), if it's in your contract.

Up to £30,000 of redundancy pay is tax free.

Was speaking to a fella in work then who has worked here for 20+ years. Says for some reason the company always does redundancies in November prior to Christmas.

Obviously seems morally wrong doing this but is there a reason financially they would do this? Just seems a weird time to get rid of humans.

I guess in some ways it’s better than Jan when you may have raked up a load of credit card debt on presents. That’s what companies would argue anyways.

Employment law in the UK is always up to interpretation from both sides - hence your need for Union advice & action .....

A regional officer from a Trade Union would pick up on this & put industrial tribunal papers in - you have 15 weeks to withdraw them ....if they treat you correctly - I tell both of my kids always join a Union ..... as a still a trade unionist even on retirement ......
