Redundancy help

This is why everybody should be in a union. They won't and shouldn’t stop redundancies but they will ensure you are represented fairly and legally. If you're not in a union you're easy pickings.

A bit rushed? At Honda, where my missus worked, redundancies were announced from nowhere snd people escorted from their desks to the gate with no notice. It was to protect the business from malice, theft, espionage opportunity or revenge. Horrendous.

My missus was offered redundancy while working at Dyson's automotive department when it closed. Then she was asked back to general Dyson meaning she would not be redundant. I pointed out that taking redundancy meant she would have half a year's pay for no work and that she'd have 6 months to find another job. She took that option and found a better paid job within 2 weeks. It's a sellers market - employers are finding it hard to recruit skilled staff.

Good luck.

I've been on both sides, made people redundant and then was made redundant myself. As others have said there should be a consultation period, and then they should interview for the remaining posts, asking everyone the same questions and scoring it on a matrix. From what you've said it sounds like they're following correct procedure. Regarding redundancy pay, if your contract doesn't state anything you'd probably get standard redundancy which depends on length of service and age. It's not a huge amount of money and is capped as well. You can find details on the government website. One thing to add is if they've previously made people redundant on enhanced terms make sure you know that. I was made redundant with no proper restructure or interview process which was annoying as I'd always followed due process myself when I'd done it as a manager. They then tried to pay me statutory redundancy pay when they'd previously paid people more, arguing it was different. I went online and found a case where a company had been taken to tribunal and lost for doing this, and sent it to the Head of HR. They then paid me my proper amount of redundancy pay along with others who were entitled.

Sad news.
What sort of job you looking for?
Maybe someone on this forum could help or point you, only if you needed, of course
Thank you, I'm 63 , no one emplying me in Fashion Merchandising anymore, they want young folk. I just do cleaning jobs now, only job old women can get, I don't mind, it's no stress and always broo. Cupboards to hide in 😉. The always low hours though so it means I need 5 or 46 jobs going at the same time

Good morning @john jako . Sorry I was in a bit of a rush last night so just posted the links. They have to tell you what the package is otherwise how can you make an informed decision on what you want to do. Unfortunately some companies don't understand the difference between voluntary and compulsory redundancy and don't offer an enhanced package. They have to consult with you - not just tell you some of you have to go and you have to be given time to think about what has been offered. The matrix is usually around length of service, sick record, disciplinary record, that sort of thing but they can't discriminate on grounds of disability.
My advice would be, if you want to leave, to ask them to make you an offer. If ypu don't want to leave, think of alternative positions in your workplace and ask them if you can do that. You could also ask if they have offered voluntary redundancy across the whole workforce - there may be people who are desperate to leave and would jump at the chance of a package.

Genuine question - have you tried the Civil Service? They can't discriminate on age grounds and there's usually loads of jobs depending on your skills and qualifications. They are also very flexible on the hours you work. Look at Civil Service Jobs website.

Cheers, will have a look
Don't know about where you live littlesue but he is right, I know of a few people that have got jobs in the Civil Service recently, seem to like it , and they get decent pay / opportunities to go onwards after not being there very long.

When we've had to let staff go, never due to business performance but due to them being fired, we get rid immediately for those reasons! We pay them off fully though!

100% agree with this. Was the best career move i ever made. Went from working split shifts with alternate work schedules between Monday - Sunday to Monday - Friday flexi time.

Moved 2 and a half years ago and have got 2 big promotions since then so lots of opportunities to develop, atleast where i am.

Supermarkets?
My mate is the same age as you...he works at tesco 2 days a week 3pm till 11pm...no stress.
Sainsbury's always need folk.
Can you drive...delivery driver?
Sainsbury's 12.50 an hour.

I would focus on things that you can control.

1) update your CV
2) sign up to Reed. LinkedIn, the main job boards, utilise your network.
3) you could apply for about 100 jobs between now and Monday. Do 1 click applications, and the odd 1 that is more detailed.
4) map out 5-10 recruitment agencies for temporary work. Then sign up, ring up, follow up. Do you drive? Potential for work as a van driver, picker or packer or else. Take out a 0% card if possible do HGV license 1 week course. Get work.
5)do job interview prep STAR answers etc
6)https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay <—-understand your worst case.
7)be ready to maximise your matrix if in your control.
8) analyse all of your finances and optimise.
9) if you are not made redundant do all of the above anyway, as usually there is more than one round of redundancy. If the company is a sinking ship don’t go down with it.
10) the company is more than likely following correct procedure, it may be worth looking into if they are however I would prioritise all of the above first.
