Roberto Martinez discussion

Don't get you, mate. Liverpool weren't poor last season, they were astonishingly good. But without Suarez, they've lost a good 40% of their collective ability, and with Sturridge missing today make that more than 50%.

They were poor today and there for the taking. They weren't poor in the Anfield derby last season.

Balotelli missed a sitter and Tim made several good saves, they weren't poor just poor by last season's standards. Had we gone for it they would've picked us off at will. RM played the perfect game, on another day Gerrard's freekick would've hit the wall and we would've won 1-0. Would you still be whinging about RM had that happened?

Its all in hindsight mate. Basing there opinions of what we should have done after they have seen whats happened. They can't lose.

Not really. Sturridge was a solid doubt before this game, Suarez as we know is gone. and Liverpool generally have had a shaky start to the season. Martinez made noises before the game about not changing the attacking philosophy which was so misplaced at Anfield last season. It would've been the right time to attack them.

They were there for the taking today, we should be royally miffed we didn't step up.

Don't like criticising Martinez but I agree with the poster above. Again today;
  • too slow makes the necessary changes. What was he waiting for to bring Eto'o on??
  • Barry looked shot. Why didn't he get subbed?
  • Hibbert should never start and replacing him with Browning was a nothing substitution.
  • We needed a creative #10 in the summer. Was Besic playing there today?
  • Why hasn't he told Baines to stop taking corners. It's a disgrace!!!
Thank god for the emergence of Stones!

Your right about that sub, should of been done the second they scored, no reason to wait for 10 mins. As for our corners, we dont have anyone in the side who can take them, we may as well just let the opposiiton have a goal kick whenever we get one.

Starting Hibbert thou was the right move, we needed Stones to be in the middle and today was the game to be starting Browning.

How would we have won 1-0 in that scenario? If you want to change what happened in the past, you can't possibly account for what happens next. Would Jags have blasted a shot goalwards, or even be that far up the pitch, had the score been 0-0?

Our keeper made some solid saves, but nothing that I wouldn't expect him to make. We played too cautious today, the exact mentality Martinez was warning against before the game. This kind of contradiction in what he's saying and what the team are doing on the pitch is not something that should happen every week.

According to Martinez we didn't change our attacking philosophy, it just didn't work out. Liverpool probably thought the same about us having a dodgy start and thought we were there for the taking and it also didn't work out for them.

Exactly. It's not working out. Look at the league table after 6 games, we're not sitting very pretty. Look at our performances in the last 3 games, it's not working out.

Martinez needs to adapt so that what he's planning is mirrored in what's actually happening...or at least come close to it.

We should've beaten both Leicester and Arsenal, not the manager's fault we couldn't hold on so essentially we've had 2 stinkers against Chelsea and Swansea. We've been without Ross all season and without Coleman for half the games, Kev went off injured as well today. Some people need to get a grip

..we'll be ok I reckon. I love it when we play with a bit of flair and create chances, today wasn't a RM type performance. I'm happy with our boss, it can't always be an upward spiral. Perhaps we are having the season we should've had when he first took over. He's good, we're good and time will confirm that.

Like we were last season and got battered 4-0?

RM clearly can't win

No, he can't.

And any tactical plan he had was thrown into disarray when Kev pulled up lame.

I think we saw another side to Roberto today.

Despite what he might say in public, not conceding was his main aim today IMO.

And to that end he spiked their guns well in the main.

That chance Balotelli missed aside, they never caused us much alarm inside the box and I don't think they should have had the free kick they scored from.

The problem is as fans we're constantly striving for more and when you set your standards as high as Martinez did last year then it's very difficult. Moyes faced the exact same problem of trying to kick on and find that next level.

I'm in no doubt we'll finish in the top 7 though and that's about right for the squad we have. Not feeling confident about the cups at all right now but that'll change when our form picks up.
