Of course Martinez rates and we could have given him regular game time but it would have been at the expense of Oviedo. Look how many times Oviedo has played since Newcastle. However he didn't sign his contract so that's that. Oviedo is staying and he is going..
Yeah I think that is probably most likely, very hard to keep three good players for a position as specialised as LB even at the very rich clubs.

Baines has been one of my favourite players for a long time, and up until recently I honestly rated him as one of the very best left-backs in the world. However, I look at these situations and wonder what the plan is at Everton.

Martinez seems happy to back the board, same as Moyes before him, so I can only assume he knows the score when it comes to transfer budgets (or lack thereof). This makes me wonder why there seems to be no desire to cash in on players before their values begin to decline, despite the manager knowing there won't be money available to adequately replace them.

There is a clutch of players that appear destined either to retire here or drop down a level for next to nothing, leaving gaps all over the squad.

Obviously this isn't something Martinez has introduced - it's been an issue for as long as I can remember - but it's the sort of short-termist mindset I fully expected him to eradicate when he came here.

I think in these situations the manager has to show a lot of balls. Baines isn't the same player who was courted by the mancs 18 months ago and football is a ruthless business.

I'd be looking to give Garbutt a chance to at least see if he can improve the team. We're essentially playing for nothing in the remaining games anyway, it's a great chance to do some experimenting.

I think we had someone to slowly faze out and eventually replace Baines. However there's not a lot a club can do in that situation. I think there's talent in the U21s etc however only time will tell how many make it. Galloway, Browning, Ledson, Henen and Garbutt if he signs look promising.

He can't do that because if he does Oviedo would want to leave. Martinez is caught between a rock and hard place until Garbutt signs.

Even young players are refusing to sign for Chelsea because they know that's what they're going to do and that's with Chelsea paying big wages.

I was thinking in particular Ryan Bertrand who barely played for Chelsea yet had successful loan spells at Villa and Southampton and was sold for a tidy sum.

They made £10 mill on Lukaku without ever playing him!

There's a load of players Chelsea did that with however they bought them all a few seasons ago when the practices wasn't as well known in preparation of FFP so they could then sell them freeing funds for the 1st team.

Now with Rom leaving for 1st team football and a few others leaving without every playing for Chelsea other players are weary of joining Chelsea and then just being farmed about to teams that have no real interest in them. Sometimes it works like with Lukaku but sometimes they go there just to fill squad positions and it doesn't. The guy that joined Leicester had an offer from Chelsea and I'm pretty sure I read Gil had an offer from a big club too.

Sure Garbutt is leaving us for similar reasons although I think in his instance it's a mistake because unlike in those cases he has a future here where as those players where probably never going to play for Chelsea.

Oviedo is nowhere near good enough though. We should be encouraging him to leave.

Garbutt has a real chance at being a good player, and should be given game time to help his development.

Wrong to say we are playing for nothing. We need to improve our league position because with the TV money we would get a bigger share. however I am with you on the Garbutt business.

Wow Ralphy that is one from the blindside. Must admit I felt quite often that Oveido was better played more upfront that at LB. It was more in that position he was playing when his leg was broken and he was putting in good performances.

That's irrelevant as it's not our decision at this stage. He has had plenty of games so there's no reason why we would think giving him more will change his mind as the closer to the summer it gets the less reason he has to sign. All that's likely is that he would be putting himself in the shop window for someone else.

I was someone who wanted him to see more games earlier on in the season for your reason but that time has past.
