How have I dismissed him as useless?

Just because I've not declared he should be starting games ahead of Baines doesn't mean I think he's usless, I'm being realistic about his potential. There's a far bigger pool of 'next big things' who do nothing than there is of superstars.
I admit useless is a bit of an exaggeration you but you have seemed pretty dismissive of him, more so than a qualified "he might not develop" comment about a young player.

But perhaps I have misunderstood you.

if he wants to develop, he can go to loanspell
he's not good enough to be in our opening xi so he must wait. he should understand that after baines he will have big role but these kids have no patience, they think theyre damn special. get in the effin line and eat some humble pie lad.

He's 21. He needs to be playing week in, week out. You've gone very judgemental and we don't know the situation. For all you know, Garbutt asked to go on loan and Martinez said no because he needs him for cover.

I'm opposed to the idea that he should be getting game time over a very good player who's vital to us playing well, or even moving the player to accomadate a young inexperienced lad based on a handful of apperances that were nothing more than solid.

Martinez has shown in his time here that he will play young players if there ready or good enough, and so far his judgement has looked spot on, why people should start questioning it now seems odd. I'm sure we've both seen and heard how these things work out time and again, players looks good for youth team...people claim there the next big thing...player starts a few games...player disappears without a trace to their rightful level.

If he's good enough he'll get games and make the grade, but have we ever released a young prospect that's gone on and proved the coaching staff wrong? I can't recall one in over 30 years of watching this same cycle being repeated every other season with young players.

Imo his appearances have been an improvement on "nothing more than solid", especially the Wolsfburg game where he was excellent against the very same players that carved Bayern Munich open. Perisic and De Bruyne specifically targetted him as a weak link but he held up very well.

We may not be able to offer him regular first team football barring injuries but there are ways of giving him a bit more game time without disrupting the squad too much. For instance by playing him in games such as against West Brom at home to give Baines a rest or subbing him in late in a game. Martinez might have done that more if our form had been a bit better - throwing young players into a team on a bad run, especially a defender, can be detrimental to their development. The fact he played him in the Wolfsburg game makes me think he does rate him.

But I guess we will see. My bet is he will move on to get a first team spot as he has already done two loan spells and realistically another loan is the only way we can offer him regular football.

If nothing else, this is inefficient utilization of an asset. A talented English left back is worth a lot of money, and there's a possibility Luke will leave for a tribunal fee. TV contract or not, Everton are not in a position to make many of those mistakes.

For those earlier in the thread saying Oviedo had a bad game - for me he didn't. I was at the game and at no point did I think he made any major mistake. Was out of position for the Ibe chance when Robles made a good save, and really did nothing wrong for Ibe's shot - he stood him up and let the player hit it from a long way out, rather than dive in, which is sensible as it would have had to have been some strike to go in (as it as it was a really good effort).

He did the exact opposite of that. He turned his back on him as he was terrified of being skinned.

Of course Martinez rates and we could have given him regular game time but it would have been at the expense of Oviedo. Look how many times Oviedo has played since Newcastle. However Garbutt didn't sign his contract so that's that. Oviedo is staying and he is going.

Quite frankly I'm OK with that. Oviedo was brilliant last season and has broken bones for us. Garbutt has just cost us a wage for the past 3 years.
