2017/18 Kieran Dowell

It's a great move for him.

Play week in, week out in a competitive league as opposed to a regular for the U23's and the odd spot in the bench if he's lucky.

It's part of our inferior mentality that we're looking at players like Davies and Dowell to be saviours. How many Top 4 regularly play kids from their own academy set ups? If he's good enough he'll come back and challenge, if not we'll get a decent fee from a team at his level.

Remember the clamour for Garbut to replace Baines after 3 good corners? That's why top managers are paid millions and are probably a better judge than us banging away at keyboards in frustration at kids "not getting a chance."

This!

I said in the youth team thread that I thought Dowell needed regular game time but we should be sending him abroad rather than the championship. He needs to play competitive football at a level above the 23's so from that point of view it's a positive.
My concern (without building dowell up to the level of some le-tissieresque god) is that in order to see the best of dowell he needs to be in a team of thinking footballers who are on the same lavelength as him. The reason I wanted Dowell to go abroad is that technically the players he would be playing alongside and against would be better than the championship and we would get a better idea of the player Dowell could become.
Glad the lad is going to get regular football, just thought we could have got a better league for him to showcase his undoubted talent. Good luck to him!

Koeman will not be with us season 2018/19. He is exactly the wrong sort of manager for us at the moment. He's every bit as risk-averse in his approach as Moyes. His selections and substitutions are as puzzling as Martinez's. His aversion to putting youth and energy above older, uninspiring plodders is a criminal waste of talent. Add to this an unapproachable, obstinate personality that has upset players at every club he's been at, and you get the reason for my conclusion.

Judging by the first sentence I reckon you were out for a pint with Ronnie and Mosh the weekend
One question
Who paid for the drinks

...let's not forget that Dowell has never truly played competitive open age football. I'm a huge fan but there are a few imponderables about his consistency and application to make the step up. The quality is undoubtably there but can he positively impact competitive football matches on a week by week basis.

This move will hopefully provide the answers all of us are looking for.

Yeah this basically.

Dowell was fairly poor for the U23's last season too. Certainly not one of the better players.

The lad obviously has talent and has had a decent pre season but he is nowhere near ready for top flight football yet. A loan at a decent club like Forest is perfect for everyone involved.

How many current Everton players who will start or make the bench this season are consistent in offering good quality? Gueye, Schneiderlin....erm....help me out....

It's utter nonsense to claim this is a decision based on finding consistency when the whole team barring those two named cant string two or three good games together.

Davies - Holgate and weirdly to DCL all seem to be in and around the first team squad,

DCL was bought in by Koeman, he wasn't given a chance from the ranks. Holgate was here before Koeman arrived and blooded before he arrived. Ditto Davies.

So, erm. that's it.

Bingo.

Good move. Let's hope he's a focal point of their team & really develops.

Much better than the odd 15min from the bench & having his confidence shattered by morons screaming every time he doesn't hoof it after one second (ala Stones & Barkley).

I think it's worth remembering that the point of a loan (from the parent club's perspective) is not really to let the player shine and get a load of plaudits, but to help them develop. Dowell can't spend his career complaining that his team mates aren't technically good enough to play with him, he needs to work out how to be a team player, and what it takes to be involved senior football and positively affect matches on a regular basis, in my opinion the Championship is the most logical place for him to do that.

Davies was blooded with the first team before Koeman?

You mean when Martinez didn't play him at all during his tenure here, or let him be in the U23's while Davies was called up to train with the senior England set up (just FYI, by Roy Hodgson, who spotted the talent but Martinez didn't, it seems)?

Right.

Do you never cease trying to find a negative about literally everything?

With the imminent arrival of Sigurdsson and the competition already in the squad, then Dowell was simply not going to get much game time this season. He's 19 and has not yet had a loan move to play regular competitive football. He's now going to Forest to get a full season in the Championship and therefore enhance his development. Seriously, what is wrong with that?

Koeman has both bought youth, and played youth, he obviously feels that Dowell needs to play competitive football as opposed to being on the fringes of the squad and playing for the U23's most of the time.
