2017/18 Kieran Dowell

It's a great move for him.

Play week in, week out in a competitive league as opposed to a regular for the U23's and the odd spot in the bench if he's lucky.

It's part of our inferior mentality that we're looking at players like Davies and Dowell to be saviours. How many Top 4 regularly play kids from their own academy set ups? If he's good enough he'll come back and challenge, if not we'll get a decent fee from a team at his level.

Remember the clamour for Garbut to replace Baines after 3 good corners? That's why top managers are paid millions and are probably a better judge than us banging away at keyboards in frustration at kids "not getting a chance."

If we get left back cover in I would loan Connolly out. If we get another Striker Calvert-Lewin would be allowed to go out. Walsh and Charsley would be another 2 to go out on loan. As well as Dowell played in them 2 games so did McAleny a couple of years ago but then went backwards because he couldn't get game time. If Dowell tears up the Championship this season he'll come back having priced a point and make it very difficult for the manager to ignore him. If he's not good enough to get into Forests team and make a difference he definitely wasn't ready for us. I just wish it was a 6 month loan so we could bring him back earlier if he was really on fire!

It says to me koeman doesn't wanna know any of the younger players. Holgate and kenny overlooked for a player Southampton didn't want. I feel like he only plays the younger players if he absolutely has too
Holgate played a lot last season. Tom Davies was given a good run.

Calvert-Lewin was given a go as well.

But sure, yeah, he's not interested in youth, despite loaning out Dowell to develop him a bit more.

But like you keep saying, it's all about opinions.

we've probably got a recall option mate.

You can only recall loanees in transfers windows now and think it has to be an agreed option beforehand as well for January.
We have a really problem with our squad if you want a recall on a lad who has not really played for us.

...let's not forget that Dowell has never truly played competitive open age football. I'm a huge fan but there are a few imponderables about his consistency and application to make the step up. The quality is undoubtably there but can he positively impact competitive football matches on a week by week basis.

This move will hopefully provide the answers all of us are looking for.

Can only ultimately judge a managers policy with younger players after a 2-3 years and seeing any pattern, one season can be a blip.

Not playing any for a year can be a case of just not having any decent ones at the club at the right time.

What i hope we don't see - is a case of the loan system just being entirely used to drive the price up on younger players we then go and sell on without them ever getting a chance regardless of how they perform away on that loan (Chelsea arguably do that - doesn't matter how they play - once they are perma loaned they tend to be sold ultimately without featuring hardly at all).

I also hope we don't get into the model of buying effectively journeyman at best type players who then slot in ahead of talented younger players and block their path to the first team when ready.

Dowell - loads on here have long said a loan would be the best thing for him - so now people saying differently is a bit double standards in my opinion.

Davies - Holgate and weirdly to DCL all seem to be in and around the first team squad, couple of others have been given a go and have now been loaned out (deemed not to be ready i would imagine), Kenny is the paradox, seems ready, we have nothing really ahead of him at right back more than VERY average, so that situation will shed a lot of light on Koemans opinions on playing youth when he has those 'journeyman' options at the team now.

My negative pessimism fears we will see Martina basically become an ever present in that position though until Coleman comes back and Kenny either being loaned out or simply never getting any minutes...
