Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

Hiya lads.

I think we are all feeling the disappointment of a 1 in 12 stat.
And the journey to get there.

So I am going to join in with my annual condemnation of the current squad.
It was only what, 5/6 years ago we were all full of optimism and had a squad including Lukaku and an interested RB.
All downhill since, and all at the feet of the board. Bad decision after bad decision and Moshiri must be wishing he could go back in time and spend differently.

Pickford. Has his moments, but not our biggest issue. Remember when CA first came in and Pickford was the fans target. But CA came out and said his keeper was not the problem.

Centre backs. All a waste of time. M2M marking, zonal, blaming the manger? Holgate and Keane are NOT Prem quality defenders. Mina might be decent but always injured. Because of more pressing issues in the squad, the CB have been let of the hook. Godfrey might make the grade, but he is always going to get paired with a pub team player. We need an good old pro at the back with a couple of years in him to take control at the back and bring through Godfrey and Branthwaite, for example. Get rid of all the others.

RB. Thanks for everything Seamus. Time to step away. We have all known this for sometime. Priority.
LB. Digne is a very good footballer, but not a great defender. Be a great asset to a squad, but sadly not to be. Hopefully the new kid will make the grade. But then we need cover as I would want to keep Godfrey in the centre.

So straight away, one of my biggest issues is that the whole defence is not good enough. They have good days and we win sometimes. But on the whole they are not good enough and that is why we concede so many set plays and they keep giving the flippin ball away.

Bad enough when you defenders are not that good, but then add in no shield...

Then we need that 3rd quality midfielder to work with Allen and Doucs. Dread to think where we would be if these two hadn't come in when they did.

Not too many issues with our current attacking players, shame they never see the ball much in the first half of games.

So the BBC Priority list is:

RB
DM.
CB - old head, leader/captain

The 'to bin' list is very full, not many would survive.
All the usual suspects need to leave asap, even if they happen to have one good game in a blue moon.
Play the kids.

If you made it all the way down here, thanks for reading! :D
The players are limited but they are capable of defending set plays properly. I saw them do it last season and they were very organised.

Then the new manager changed the method and we have been awful. I dont think its unfair to ask why the manager is failing so badly in this area. The set pieces at both ends have been a joke this year.

I agree with the other points on the defence. They are really poor players. But I cant agree on the set plays because I've seen them be very organised and it doesn't take top players to be organised at set plays.

I just made a comment above that I think the oppo have improved their quality in the final third.
We have gone backwards in our ability to defend.

Also, I agree we could just as easily finish the season with an interim manager. The stats are awful against RB.

I think if you change the personnel at the back, these issues just might go away.

We can obviously improve with better personel but the set play issues won't change because they are structural

We line up static in a row and dont have anyone stopping opposition runners getting a free header. The method is idiotic. Only a stubborn idiot would persist with it. If you cant defend set plays then you shouldn't be managing at this level.

We need a midfielder who can actually pass. It’s so infuriating seeing Doucoure & Allan pick the ball up, drive forward only to waste it every time. We’ve got to get on the ball in the middle of the park and start to take control of games. Too much hoof ball atm, absolutely rubbish to watch
You are right they give the ball away a lot but are often and exposed with Benitez insisting on only playing 2 in midfield.

Brighton showed yesterday with very average players properly coached that a team with 3 in midfield with fluid movement gives the passer far greater options.

That's the reason Allan and Doucoure looked so poor yesterday.

Oh I agree, I’d have 3 in midfield as these two don’t seem to be able to play it together.

Our ‘tactics’, if you can even call them that, are pathetic at best. It doesn’t even look like our players are being coached!

The set pieces have disintegrated in quality under Benitez. Cant argue with that.

One factor is Mina not being in the team. Another factor is Davide Ancelotti not being at the club.

If we had a 'superstar' centre back then i think he would be organising on the pitch as well.

Probably a mix of everything.

If Richarlison was playing then one of their 3 would probably be monitoring him.

If we had better full backs then they wouldnt make up as much ground on us.

If we had 1 defensive midfielder with Doucoure there would be more structure rather than two players who like to chase the ball while pressing.

honest question - what actually happens to us if we breach FFP? will we get points taken off us or is a fine? if its banned from europe we do that to ourselves by the way we play anyway

The current UEFA FFP rules were set up by Platini.
Which probably means your penalty is related to your bribe offer.

In respect of penalties, it's an open book. Anything they see fit.
So it could be a big fine, or demotion by how ever many levels they see fit.
That is how I read it. Could be wrong of course :)

So some Uzbekistan backhanded offer will solve this issue

Just as a side note, if you are old enough this is not even a crisis right now!

I always respect the boys in their 60s and 70s.
They have seen proper tough times and great times.

Some of the lads on here born late 90s will only really remember from Moyes onwards.
No dramas then!

@BigBlueConk is absolutely spot on here...

Two next critical signings should a Centre back and a Defensive midfielder...if we get Patterson over the line.

I see what posters (including Conk) are saying about an "old head" at the back but id go with top quality u23 aged players.

How good have Ruben Dias (24) and Declan Rice (22) been over the past 2 seasons?

We need to find a couple like that...
Do agree with the old head but it more of the lines of proven quality need a leader so badly who is vocal and can control the defence
