£40m Bid Made For Sigurdsson

...so under the previous regime we would've seen the same spend as this summer and the significant hike in our salary structure? Even with the expected Lukaku monies I doubt that would've been the case. Indeed, the spend was largely made before the Lukaku income.

It's a bit daft to suggest we go out and spend the same amount again if the prime targets have been acquired. I know you don't like the club to be wasteful.
Under the previous regime Lukaku would have been sold last summer for 50m and half the money reinvested. That's the big difference now that some can't see.

Nothing wrong with that @davek, just good housekeeping.

Yes there is: we were promised we'd keep our best players by showing some ambition.

Fell at the first fence.

His first season here after that statement and Stones, Lukaku and Barkley (no doubt) all leave to pay for his financial "backing" of the squad.

Same old same old: just another carpetbagger.

Can you explain how we're not desperate for one mate, without reeling off a load of awful ones we currently have?

It will take much longer to build the Koeman's team...may take another year. It's pretty hard to get rid of the awful ones left over by the previous regime. And they are paid by the club week in week out.

sorry but i can't get my head around this thinking.

How will we look like mugs. Every single one of our main targets we've gone after and bought. Look at united with about 4/5 players, the RS with keita and van dijk, chelsea with lukaku. They've all missed/are missing out on their top targets and are settling for their backup options, that to me is being classed as mugs. We're making a statement by saying that we don't care if we're being taken for a ride, we're going out and landing our first choice targets. The same way as man city are.

How can you think showing strength is termed as "accepting swansea have won the battle and walking away and then deciding to pay the very same amount for a backup option, one who is nowhere near potential, has flopped at his current gaff, has never player in the premier league and is still a raw youngster?"

I'd cry if we spent all that money on him, he's done nothing deserving of the hype so far imo, a couple of good performances here and there and you want to throw £45m at that? Hmm. I think we'd look like right mugs seeing our number 1 target turn out for swansea whilst we wait about 4 or 5 years to see if our purchase actually works out.
Exactly
When did you think you would see the day when we are getting our targets and Jose is complaining that united can't get him the targets he wants
Shopping in different supermarkets but we are backing RK and getting him his players
United couldn't get Morata for Jose and settled for Lukaku.
Conte was rumoured to be upset st Chelseas lack of business
At least City are keeping their promises to Pep and just paying the money.
We seemingly are doing the same for RK and people are moaning.
Anybody miss the days of last minute loan signings and nothing else
It's not our money, the club can obviously afford it so why panic

He's scored about 15 goals since leaving United, 2 years ago.
Hernades scored 9 in 33 games for real madrid im assuming most as sub. And 39 in 76 for leverkusen since leaving man u. So 48 goals. Im assuming addition is not your strongest trait.

As for why we have messed up.
It was clear swansea wanted 50million. The player wants to join us. Leicester make 40 mil bid thats rejected. What do we do? Offer 40 mil. Stupid waste of time. They want 50 million thats it! Its non negotiable so we should have paid it and got him in weeks ago.

We are now in a market, were City £50 million has been spent on a right back. The market has gone crazy. Sigurdsson is probably worth £50 million in terms of his ability, premier league experience and to Swansea. But he is 28 if doubt he'll have a decent sell on value in a couple of years. Are we in a position to spend this type of money, with the knowledge, in two years time he might only be worth a fraction of that? Could we sweeten the deal for them, with a loan player?
Give um Niasse plus 49.9m

Do you actually believe the nonsense about Moshiri spending cash? This is player trading cash mate. Simple as that. Same old financial model in play.
But that's what was required and it's what nearly every club uses - Spurs and Liverpool and probably Arsenal included.

Three clubs have the luxury of not having to, and even Chelsea have done so anyway in previous years.

Yes, we'd have loved to keep Lukaku, but he didn't want to be here so we've got a world record fee for him.

In the past, you know full well that wouldn't have been spent on several £30m players. It'd have been our entire budget. It isn't this year.

To keep pedalling that is utter tosh.

Deulofeu and Cleverley - two squad players who had no impact on the side - have brought in £18.5m between them, taking our up front takings (not inc. the Rom add ons) to £93.5m this summer, plus the fees of McGeady (250k) plus Kone (free) off the books.

We've brought in - again I'm not counting the add ons here - two players for £50m between them in Pickford and Keane.

Sandro is a snip at £5.2m, while Henri cost us £6.8m - so that's another £12m there; £62m so far.

Klaassen is £24m, giving us £86m 'reinvested' - leaving us, not counting add ons, approx £7.5m in the black so far this summer. Rooney and Martina are clearly on frees, though Rooney's wages are a big leap for us.

That to me, is great business. We've improved the squad by moving on players who weren't good enough or didn't want to be here. This needed to be done.

It's why, in the grand scheme, our £40m bid for Gylfi is irrelevant. We're still in profit so far and if the net spend mutants want to be pleased then they should be thrilled with this.

We are also chasing a striker, and another option for the defence. All in these three players will most likely cost £80m at the least.

Hypothetically, lets say that's the case and we add another £80m to the £86m spent so far (no add ons), giving us £186m total.

The only two first team players that may now leave imo are McCarthy - squad player at best - and Ross.

That'd be £55m easy between them, but we'd still be £20m in the red for this window even then.

I'd have no issue with that. The sale of Rom was always going to cause disparity and people seem to think that we should stockpile players for the sake of it. There's no need.

If Rom hadn't have left, we wouldn't need to spend big on a striker anyway.

Next year will be the litmus test if it comes to it that we are in the situation where we need to just add two-three quality players over the course of the window, which given our squad building this summer, you'd like to think that's a scenario we should be in come July 2018.

I agree. Only a fool would try and negotiate on a price. A fool I say!
