£40m Bid Made For Sigurdsson

I think the problem is Sigurdsson was most likely identified as a target quite a while ago, and crucially long before this window started and the transfer fees became ridiculous. If we'd been doing our job correctly and planning for this window well in advance then I have no doubt koeman singled him out and he and Walsh probably anticipated a fee of around 30 million would seal the deal, as it would have done every other transfer window in history. As it is, we're in the middle of the craziest window ever where Man City are paying 50 million for full backs and where Leicester opened up the bidding on Sigurdsson for 40 million.

30-35 million, and I don't think anyone in here would have a problem. But 50, regardless of how the fee is split between up front and add ons seems overpriced.i do wish we'd cast our net a bit wider than the premier league though (yes I know we signed klaasen) , it seems inevitable if you shop in England you get ripped off. If we took 45 million to the continent surely we could get some better value for money?
To be fair mate the bids we're sent back by Swansea before the silly season started. He's Swansea's star player they are going to want a small fortune for him. The problem we have is, in a way a good one when do we walk away. They'll have back targets I'm sure.

Dont think so mate, the figures are approx including amortisation granted but a significant liability has been taken on annually with this summer recruitment, i do think there will have to some out goings. Its the true investment on transfers this summer, the transfer fees to a large extent are irreverent and over all incremental add ons to the over all cost of the transfer in comparison to the wages.

I dont see wages as being the big issue.

Rooney will pick up a big wage...though that will be offset by the savings on his fee. Sigurdsson if he arrives for the ridiculous price that will be paid for him will be on a tidy amount too. The rest who came in aren't going to leap to the top of the pay structure. We got rid and will get rid of a lot of wages off the books.

Last three accounts saw a steady rise in wages:

2014 £69M
2015 £78M
2016 £84M

I cant see the next couple of seasons showing anything other than a stead rise up to £100M. Completely in line with the trend established and one that will be covered by increased revenue...mostly from tv - as per usual.

i'd say ramirez and henry is walsh.

problem is koeman stated he wants proven players in the premier league. most of the young players probably also walsh. I'm sure if there is a young foreign player worth it walsh will sign him.

I get where you're coming from but they were pretty obvious ones for me. Maybe I'm being a little too cynical? Joint top goal scorer in Belgium and one of the top scorers in Spain - both young and relatively inexperienced. Not really in the Kante or Mahrez mould.

I wouldn't say it's ever been considered a weakness. He's always been renowned as taking a good set-piece.

But there is A LOT more to his game than just that.

As a huge supporter of his, I considered it as one of his biggest weaknesses. Often criticizing his corners or set pieces.

He didn't get many set piece assists prior to last season. Only 3 or 4 for Swansea in 11/12, 14/15 and 15/16. That's a maximum of 4 set piece assists in his 19 assists across those 2½ seasons.

However, due to his role last season where he was forced to defend on the flank and average 27 passes per match compared to his normal 37 passes per match.. It limited his exposure on the ball to primarily set pieces during large parts of the season.

This resulted in his ''poor'' open play record, oh and the fact that he played for 4 different managers last season and didn't have any players capable of contributing in open play.

With no PL experience
Why can't people see this
We can't afford to give a player six months to settle , to get over homesickness , to wait till his family moves over and settle
We need players to hit the ground running.
If Sandro and Klassen don't settle we play Rooney and Davies till they do

You probably would, but find one:

  • Who is as good as Sigurdsson for the money
  • Who is proven in the Prem
  • Would come here considering no CL
Spending huge sums on players with no PL experience is a huge risk.

The whole pl-proven player thing is so overrated and smacks of conservative, traditional, unadventurous football thinking. Name the best 10 pl players of the past ten years, then name how many of them came from outside the league?

Even if you DO subscribe to the idea, is pl-proven essentially worth 20+ million pounds? Because Sigurdsson is a 25m player if he's on the continent.

Alternatively, name a team who has broken through to the next level by overpaying for the safety of 'proven' talent from within their league. Was that Spurs' model? Monaco? Leipzig? Atletico?

Edit: sorry, wrote this on the move and it reads a lot more aggressive than intended haha. Just jotting thoughts down

Of course, he'd never have come here, but the general gist is if City can buy one of the best young wide playmakers in the world for the same price that we're willing to pay for Sigurdsson, then I find it really really hard to imagine we couldn't find any more interesting options for the money. It's possible that NONE of them would agree to come here, but it looks like we hardly tried based on the fact that we've been after Gylfi for ages. I dunno. If you gave your scouting team a remit to find the best playmakers in the world THAT ARE PROVEN IN THE ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE that would come to a Europa PL team, seemingly on the up, offering £150k a week wages, with a £45m budget, would you really be happy if Sigurdsson was the best they came up with? I truly hope it works out but it just really spins me out. Especially as younger star players are getting savvier about not going straight to a top CL club.

Ah, I didn't know that to be fair, BBC nor Guardian mentioned any addons. Still, rough point stands.
Corrected that there
It's what Koeman has stated he wants
Can Guardiola guarantee that Silva will be a success
I give you Claudio Bravo among many others

Because there is no evidence of PL proven being a thing.

It is said all the time but there is no evidence that signings made from within the league are more successful than those made from abroad.

And for every player that was a success I can name 2 that wasn't
Even City Chelsea United paid big money for duds
Spurs wasted a lot of the Gareth Bale money
We can't afford that luxury
