£40m Bid Made For Sigurdsson

Van der Sar was very unusual, I guess not many teams were in for a new keeper that summer (and he had lost his first team place at Juve). OK name one even in a CL club you think might come for that price, the key is it he has to have a reason to come like Van Der Sar i.e. not getting regular football, a new signing likely to start ahead of him, stalling on a new contract due to wage demands etc. If it's so easy I expect you can provide at least one name if not a list of half a dozen (which I am pretty sure Walsh and Koeman have been looking at)>

Deal not done with Juve: Patrik Schick
The new brain/ Thomas Hassler : Max Meyer

There's two and its almost 230am here...

We will sign, Martina, Sigurdsson, Giroud i think, and then we will ship out a lot of players - given us the room and raising money to maybe look at a couple of other positions once this batch have been settled late pre season.

Wouldn't shock me to see us shift off Mori and Jagielka and go in with a big bid on VVD late on - he's someone Koeman will know won't take time to adapt to his style and system etc

I think it makes sense, those 3 (though were we planning to replace lukaku with giroud all along or was someone else in our sights as surely we wouldn't expect arsenal to sell)...

Move on a lot of players and then when everyone thinks weve finished our business BANG we sign a top centre back

I reckon Giroud was identified as being a likely player we could get as soon as we pulled away from Lacazette when Arsenal showed firm interest. Would make sense

Sigurdsson, Giroud and a defensive utility player and then we have had a cracking summer.

Would expect Barkley and Jimmy Mac to go, but people expecting more outgoings and incomings than that are playing Football Manager (or FIFA for the cool kids).

Too big an overhaul would be a mistake - as would losing players like Jags and Barry. Some players add more value than what we see on a Saturday.

But this is the point. I'm all for throwing money about. But a player like Silva is worth that money - young, still got potential to be the world's best if he went in the right direction. That's an investment.
What if he flops in the PL like Salah or struggles to make an impact like Pogba
We as was stated earlier have a small window of opportunity to move on
City and clubs of their ilk can afford to give a 40/60 m pound player a year to settle in as they have equally as good on the bench.
We don't and can't afford to wait a year.
Hence a proven PL player who can hit the ground running

We do need another left back unless Connolly steps up and ideally a centre back to partner with keane.

Glad this one seems nailed on.

If it ends up being £45-50m you wonder just how much we'll have spent after the striker and any further defenders come in.

This summer I wanted to see something to indicate that we were going places with Moshiri and that lessons had been learned from last summer and so far it's looking good.

That's been the case for decades. Moyes got 4th, a semi final, and a final. Martinez got us a record points haul (should've been champions league), two semi finals.

Koeman has outspent both managers after 1 season in charge.

No excuses IMO. If he's wanting the Barca job etc he needs to win trophies and take the pressure.

He shouldn't be expecting an easy ride.
No easy ride, just realism. Moyes got to 1 final in 22 attempts domestically. Not sure he's any sort a gauge.

This is what I didn't want to see happen with the Lukaku money, overspending on good (not great) players. It feels like Koeman and/or Walsh are obsessed with Sigurdsson and aren't willing to give up the chase even if it borders on the ridiculous. I respect that they want the guy but we need to be able to move on when negotiations reach the silly level. We don't have unlimited money and have to use it intelligently.
According to some people it's not the Lukaku money , that's already been spent
It's the Barkley and McCarthy money that's been spent now

sure i read somewhere they wanted £27mil for him, that must be a joke Walshy should be all over him..

I saw a report suggesting Roma had lodged a £29m bid. We are a lacking a match winner from open play who can score a goal or thread a pass through the eye of the needle out of nothing
I'd be surprised if the price was the same for a premier league club, especially us with how we took Walsh from them and the fact we're competing with the for Sigurdsson.

£40 million is 10 million more than what we are prepared to pay and £10 million less than what they want, so I would guess it will go through at that level.

My hope is that this year is the last time we overpay like this, and that we get plenty of players in at the £5 - £15 million level in who can develop into top class players. We don't have the kind of money that City and Chelsea have.
And it's attitudes like that , that has us in 7th place
We need to spend to get better
@davek
Have a word will you

You can say the same about any transfer. How's Klassen gonna take to the prem? Sandro? Sigurdsson outside being the main man at Swansea?

And why can't we wait a year? Are we on Koeman's clock or Everton as a club building a team?
