By my rough calculations, that's a £47M net spend by RM in his time here.

Just to put that net spend into context, in that same period, amongst those we're supposed to show a clean pair of heels to:

Newcastle net spend £44M
West Ham net spend £80M
West Brom net spend £49M
Norwich net spend £31M
Sunderland net spend £38M
Crystal Palace net spend £65M
Leicester City net spend £49M
Bournemouth net spend £43M

Forget about the financial elite. Even some of these clubs are eclipsing us now in terms of spending power and that'll be the same until the club sorts itself out off the field.

We spent 13.5m on a player, now whilst its not a massive amount, as pointed out above its the 3rd highest fee we have paid in our history, if thats not a statement im not sure what is.

Its a major risk for the manager, he will be judged on this signing, given its considerable amount, its a statement from the board that they are willing to back and support the manager.

All in all a very pleasing window on the main, IMO.

Clearly due to the lad being an unknown and being crap on FM and FIFA wont please everybody, but im fairly sure once he settles we will have a real weapon to use.

Plenty of weapons on here that we can use if needed

It's put to bed any daft notions about him being under pressure, that's for sure. They back Roberto to the hilt.

Not surprised either. They're not daft: almost into the LC final only for a massive balls up by officials; looking at a QF berth in the FA Cup; midtable (in no danger and plenty of time to kick on into the top half); playing the best attacking football we've seen for decades.

Of course, that wont stop the wishful thinkers who want a more direct style of football and him out. But they'll just have to wear it I'm afraid.

Yes.

You dont have to imagine mate, he spent £67M on the English Champions in just one season...and killed them for a generation.

Well done Moyesie. If only you were given cash at Everton.

On a more serious note if the board are keeping bobby then I guess they should back him financially, be counter productive keeping a man but not supporting him, be interesting to see this Niasse guy, just keeping in spirits with the EFC tradition im going to Boo him when he is paraded on Wednesday......

It's not just down to that though. It's the massive sums that the Premier League teams can afford now.

They made the point on 5Live yesterday that deals like £10m-£20m just don't do it for the 'big money' sides anymore. They're aiming for £30m plus constantly.

The state of the league can be summed up by Iturbe, one of the biggest prospects to come from Porto and from South America in years, is now sitting on the bench at Bournemouth (even though he has so far failed to live up to his potential with his move to Roma). Amazing, even compared to 5/6 years ago.

Come off it lad, unless you're on a wind up.

We needed to shift some deadwood and we've done that. McGeady we've got a nice loan fee for that covers his wages and Naismith we got a great fee for, plus got his wages off the books.

I reckon Gibson has ended up staying partly due to the Besic injury, and partly due to the fact that nobody was willing to take him on loan that he wanted to go to - did hear that he turned down Wednesday and another Championship club earlier in the window...
Im not saying its bad business, im very pleased in fact, but acting like we are some transfer market big swinging dicks on a sub 10m net spend is silly when there will be at least half a dozen teams spending 50+ in the summer

£11m net in 11 years.

Martinez has already had more than 4 times what Moyes was given

If it was his last throw of the dice I'm sure he would of signed more players

Who and with what with. we needed a replacement for Naismith / Kone. tick

Right back; ???

Howard; 2 things come to mind
1) for some reason he daren't or won't replace him.
2) The board won't let him blow all the wad.

i think as far as transfer windows go this one wasn't terrible. We didn't lose any of our best players, they weren't unsettled as far as we know, we shipped out some deadwood and replaced Original Naisy with all new Naisy who hopefully, finally sorts out that left-hand side. In a perfect world we would have signed a backup RB and fired Tim Howard into the sun but that will wait now till the summer i guess.
Lets be honest we have a great squad of players most other sides would kill for, the playing personnel aren't the problem it's the managers system. Its a bold statement to splash so much on 1 player in January (for us anyway) but unless Berto changes his approach to defending i fear we could sign Messi and we'd still be mid table shipping goals for fun.
