Based on players I've seen.
Ok there are weaknesses all over the team but essentially we are where we are because we don't score enough goals.
So, Baines because he is a proper left back and gives you creativity.
Ball because he's the greatest player I've ever seen in a blue shirt and gives you everything.
Kanchelskis, pace and goals.
Rooney , snide , creativity and goals.

I'd still be worried about central defence !

Tarkowski
Mina
Ball
Onana
Garner
McNeil
Kanchelskis
Rooney.

Those 4 would cost you around £400/450 million in today's market and that's still only a top 6 team. That's the depth of our problems.

Incidentally, why is Peter Reid largely absent from these lists? If any player who was on the same pitch as him was giving less than 100%, he would come charging and have words with them. If we currently had a midfield general like him, we wouldn't be in such a mess.

Yeah I agree - Reid was in my team actually,. Some are arguing he's not the type of player we need, but he's definitely the type of character we seem to need now! Even his twitter thread would be a decent start at motivating our team.
 
I'm restricting myself to the players I've seen play:
Kanchelskis (goals)
Lineker (goals)
Lukaku (goals)
Rooney (goals)
 
Here's a controversial one ... with Seamus now out I'd bring in Phil Neville. Could do a solid job at right back and was a good captain in his day.
I'd want a prime Arteta putting balls through for DCL and a Baines/Pienaar combo back on the left hand side
 

GK is fine so not Nev even though he was the best in the world. Ball for everything he had. Latchford because he could score goals. Davie Thomas to get the ball into Latchford. The fourth Lyons to show these cowards what it means.
