It made its way up to the country.

Loads of my mates were in bands during that time in liverpool and every night seemed to turn into a sleaze fest.

Seemed like sex was promoted in such an extreme way back then that there was so much pressure on young people to be reckless and promiscuous.

I went to so many indie nights back then and the scenes were awful looking back.

I’d like to think a lot of that has changed now. So many boundaries were crossed. I think the young girls felt pressured to go along with a lot of it because it was kinda cool to go with the indie lads, because of people like Russell brand.

  • The number of reports from the public and officers of alleged misconduct has doubled

Not saying I disagree, but just pointing out a detail.

Older than 21, so 21 is OK?

You're 20 and your GF is 16, legal.
You become 21 and your GF becomes 17, legal.
You become 22 and your GF becomes 18, illegal.

Such a couple who have been having sex legally for 2 years would have to stop for 12 months until the women in this case became 19.

It does show how what is acceptable with age gaps is difficult to define and enforce.

My understanding of the article was that your last case, the 22 year old and an 18 year old, would be legal.

I agree that how the laws are defined and enforced can be difficult and complex - in that respect I don't see laws around age of consent as necessarily being any different that any other area of law.

Perhaps it will help clarify things, or confuse things further (!), if we look at the US.

There are various restrictions, some based on age difference and some on authority (eg if you are a teacher you would have more restrictions than another adult of the same age)

For my state, California, the age of consent is 18 years old. So either a 60 year old, a 22 year old or another 18 year old could legally sleep with someone once they pass their 18th birthday. If they had sex before the 18th birthday of one of the participants, even if consensual, the older person could be charged with statutory rape. (sidebar - unless the couple are married which is a whole different issue itself https://calmatters.org/politics/2023/06/child-marriage-california/)

The age of consent means that if a 17 year old has consensual sex with a 15 year old then both have technically committed a crime. However California has a "Romeo and Juliet" law so if both individuals engaging in sexual activity are minors and the age difference is three years or less, it may be considered a misdemeanor offense rather than a felony. My understanding is that in practice it is very unlikely that either would be charged, as long as it is consensual. However it would mean that your second case, of a 21 year old and a 17 year old, that could be tried as either a misdemeanor or a felony.

Some big wig legal person has come out and said this is a non starter.
Said sommat like, once you go down this route, where does it end.
 
Watched it last night, felt that I couldn't comment too much until I had.

I mean, OK, I get that he had a sex addiction but that just adds to the allegations, in my opinion. If a drug addict was suddenly found to have robbed off his grandmother, would anybody be surprised? If a sex addict was found to go to extreme lengths to feed his habit, is anybody surprised.

The shocking thing is that he was allowed to get away with it. There were so many exact comparisons with the Saville case. You look back and it is all out there, they are looking to be hiding behind the jokes but it is so obvious the narcissist in them want to make it that they are getting one over on you. Look at me being so crude, but it is just an act......honestly.

Oh and can people stop saying they should have gone to the police, it has been explained so many times that either they might have already done that or there are emotional and practical reasons why this would be a non starter.

I’d imagine the hope would be it ends with less creepy men who can’t find a girl their age dating super young girls

I think that is an over simplification.
I'm pretty sure they were getting at, how do you determine the differences.
Any normal person can see that a 16 year old and a 26 year old is wrong.
However what is the cut off, and honestly how do you enforce it?
There are always going to be wrong uns in society. They want stringing up by there nuts and violated in unnatural ways, but you can't just make up random numbers.

I don’t know, it isn’t my job to decide what the cutoffs should be.

I think having any kind of reasonable cutoff would be better than people of any age technically being able to date 16 year olds legally though.
