Aaron Lennon ( On Loan January 2015 )

How much would you pay for Lennon in the Summer

  • Up to the rumoured 6 or 7 million - worth every penny

  • No more than 5 million - he's OK, but not worth any more

  • No more than 3 million - he's got no end product ffs

  • Wouldn't take him on a free, he's badly gash

  • Stop asking me questions and stick the grill on

I'm a fan of Lennon. He'll get in behind and cause problems for opposition defences.

Hopefully we'll see next to nothing of McGeady between now and his summer departure.

Interesting to see how the lad get's on, it's obvious he has pace to burn ,but seeing that the majority of teams come to Goodison and sit deep i wonder how he will use his pace. we need a clever midfielder that can unlock packed defences.

And that's where clever management and team selections/subs should make the difference.

Tbf tho sir Alex had years of teams coming to OT and sitting deep. Didn't stop him playing pacey attacking wingers.

We could do with pienaar and osman back really for those type of games. Also just playing 1 holding CM in such games would surely help!!

I'm looking forward to seeing how this signing gets on. I don't really think there's much of a risk - it's a loan and therefore if he fails to light the place up then we don't purchase. Surely that gives Lennon the motivation to hit the ground running, you'd hope so anyway.

Tactically his pace is what we have been crying out for. Away from home we haven't had the pace to counter attack like we did last season.

Still though we need Pienaar, Gibson and Osman to get fit, and Barkley and Atsu to find some form. Unlikely to happen, so even if we settle at a rejuvenated Barkley and Pienaar returning then I think we could look to get in the top half AND make a stab of winning the Europa.

I was listening to the radio last season driving home from work,i'm 95% sure it was Pat Nevin being interviewed on Spurs,he was rubbishing Lennon,he reckoned when Lennon lost his pace,he'd struggle to hold down a place in the bottom tier of the league.
so i'm watching out for his view on the signing.
it is surprising though, a lad who'd you would think would be at the peak of his game, has not drawn very much interest from other clubs further up the league, given he's an international with over 250 games under his belt.you'd think it would be a no brainer to sign him up.

Any comments from the man himself

As with all signings it is far from straightforward. We have taken a reserve from Spurs who is 27 and fallen out of favour. His form of late hasn’t been particularly good and at times he resembles a headless chicken.

I would much prefer us to look at young winger to bring in (someone like El Grazi from Ajax or Deulofeo). However these players cost a lot of money and it’s quite clear that we don’t have that money or would be willing to spend it in January.

Lennon has shown glimpses of being a top winger in the past and he has blistering pace. If Martinez can get the best out of him he could be a very important player for us. Likewise the nature of this deal is good. We haven’t committed to spending any money on him and we have a 5 month trial to see if he will fit into our system. Given how inconsistent he can be that is ideal.

We could potentially have a replacement for Mirallas if we chose to sell him in the summer. While the fee is slightly high (7 million) this is the most we will pay and could be negotiated down, Given the number of players who could be leaving it will be a relief to know that we have the option of having a winger in to replace Mirallas if we so choose. It is a rare bit of forward planning from the club which is sensible and they should be congratulated for.

I also think this sort of signing is sensible too. It’s clear we do not have the money to go buying flavour of the month players. An in form Lennon may have cost double or even treble what he did (look at the cost of Lallana). We have to be more pragmatic and look at players who may have fallen by the wayside a little bit, lost their value but have talent irrespective of this. Moyes did this very well with Peinaar and Arteta.

Some are saying he will take Mcgeedy’s place. I thought Mcgeedy played very well at Palace on Saturday, and I could see them in the same team.

I think the most gratifying element of this is knowing we have really [Poor language removed] Spurs over. They would have been desperate to sell him in January for 7 million probably to fund a bid for Mirallas. Teams had been willing to pay it. Yet they have had to settle for giving us a 5 month trial of their player and no money paid in. I like how we held our nerve and got our man.

I also like how we brushed aside clubs like Stoke. I know it’s only the equivalent of brushing aside a spotty kid who’s dancing with an overweight woman in a nightclub, but it still feels good to know we are a cut above those clubs.

Not wanting to digress too much within the Aaron Lennon thread but:

You not reckon McGeady is a good option against the lower league teams at home who come and just sit back? Against WBA for example, his ability to beat a man and get a semi-decent cross in could have made the difference. Perhaps i'm clutching at straws here but i do think he's a good player.

He had the team actually playing with the width to stretch sides and create space. Martinez tends to use width to get the ball to the corner flag and then play it back and eventually try and force our way through the middle.

I totally agree he needs some clever management and to change his tactics a little to get the best of the squad.

I hope Martinez is ruthless about Lennon and uses him for the rest of the season and doesn't pay any fee in the Summer or give him a long contract like he did with Barry. At 27 the lad has no resale value and struggled to hold down a place in a side we are competing with. No end product either, although I hear the defensive side of his game is really good.
