He’s a terrible footballer and I’ve posted that I do t think it’s a great move abs we should be looking for someone much better in the number 10 role, but like you say maybe they know a transfer is coming, rather than a points deduction.

And again if we all of a sudden get a 12 point deduction ( very unlikely I know) And we have just given a guy who’s nearly 31 a new deal probably costing 12 to 15 mil. Is not a great move if we go down

This is my concern too. Why couldn't we have waited to see if any points deduction occurs first and then take things from there.

We are just dreadful when it comes to handing out contracts.

It's all a gamble because who knows what the club knows but if they know that a transfer ban is incoming, have to get him extended. Even if there is any possibility of a ban, they have to get him extended.

Him signing a new deal would indicate that the club do not think a points deduction of any significance is likely if at all.

Squad would be weaker without him as it stands so no issue in keeping him, but would prefer a premium wage was used for 2 younger players with more potential.

I know how we line up defensively, but he's really more of a 2nd striker than a midfielder. When you think of it that way, his lack of technical ability becomes more palatable.
I don't think it is the case he seems to carry the role of Fellaini or (whisper it quietly) Cahill before that, second striker only in possession. But the game has changed that even the second striker needs to press and that is all. In all honesty, nothing makes his technical ability palatable, I wouldn't mind it if he had his head screwed on right though.

You need experienced players in the squad. He might be knocking on a bit but even if the time comes that he's not playing regularly I'm sure his support to the team will be invaluable.

Part of a squad that's had us in that position for 2 years in a row, we shouldn't be celebrating a player doing something that needed doing because he helped put us in that place.
Coming into this season, in 11 years as a top division professional he's finished literally two in the top half of his league's table (one of those being the covid season with Don Carlo), and he usually isn't particularly near the top half. That kind of thing usually isn't a coincidence.

I don’t love his style of play but he’s been really effective under Dyche, not just the goals but his relentless press too, and is one of very few high profile Everton players recently who have fully earned a contract extension
Trouble is the press is useless when you press them into a muskets nether he gives it straight back to them
