2023/24 Abdoulaye Doucoure

Smells of desperation and maybe the know a transfer ban is incoming.

He's popped up with some important goals, but Jesus Christ watching him try and pass a ball makes my eyes bleed.
He’s a terrible footballer and I’ve posted that I do t think it’s a great move abs we should be looking for someone much better in the number 10 role, but like you say maybe they know a transfer is coming, rather than a points deduction.

And again if we all of a sudden get a 12 point deduction ( very unlikely I know) And we have just given a guy who’s nearly 31 a new deal probably costing 12 to 15 mil. Is not a great move if we go down

Think this is fine really. Lot of players going in the summer so this is one who actually contributes we now don’t need to replace. Like him or loathe him his actual productivity is good and important.

Yes if team was challenging for europe he wouldn't be on the team and he'd have been moved on like Iwobi and gray were.

But team is nowhere that and he's the main scoring threat from midfield as things stand (although I think Garner could chip in with 4-5 if he stays central).

While Dyche remains manager he'll be starting the vast majority of games, certainly all premier league ones he's fit for.

So that's the situation. Of course in true Everton style he'll sign a deal, Dyche will get sacked a few weeks later and the next one in won't rate him and he'll become an expensive benchwarmer but in current conditions he's just someone starting and contributing and getting a new deal as a result.

We have no idea if we will be able to bring in players in the next couple of windows, and until we have someone replacing Doucoures production and another good player in the midfield it would be crazy to let him leave on a free. As long as the wages are reasonable, this has got to be done to buy us another year, and to then be able to sell him then for a nice fee.

He'll be well into his 30s by then. I can't see even a Saudi team dropping 12-15m on a 32-33 year old Doucoure somehow. Gray and Iwobi were different as they're mid 20s so one still has decent resale value and the other can just be sold back to europe in about 18 months.

Think Doucoure is basically here now for next 18 months and will continue to be effective in his own way under Dyche. And also will be decent in the championship if the worst happens (I assume there's a significant reduction in salary in this deal in event of relegation).

I really do like Doucoure and believe he gives it his all on the pitch and wears the shirt on his sleeve. But he is a very average player on the ball however he does get into great positions and scores vital goals. Would be in the championship if it was not for him but think a one year deal with an option of another year is plenty which I think works well for both parties

There will be a requirement for older heads to lead the way when current oldests in the side have retired, Young, Coleman, Gueye, (not to speak of how unlikely Gomes, Alli, Keane, being offered new contracts will be) - so this looks like an effort to mitigate against a mass exodus in the first team.
We need a player to come through the youth setup, and find another value first teamer like Garner for value, on top of a season with light numbers where they all stay injury free.

and he kept us up! deserves for that alone!
Considering our situation it could turn out to be not the worst decision (if Dyche won't get sacked soon and the terms are not silly), but he didn't keep us up. He's a bang average footballer and one of the reasons we are where we are.
