2023/24 Abdoulaye Doucoure

Doucoure seems a good sort, a real team player and let’s face it he’s already insanely wealthy from what we’ve paid him. The only time he kicked off (sitting on ball) was because he wasn’t being given a chance to help the team and since Dyche has come in and played him, turns out he had a point!

I’d be surprised if he kicked up a stink of Saudi offer him megabucks and I’d also be surprised if Saudi offered him megabucks because he’s not a trendy kind of player who promoted their brand
Oh so he’s a team player when he’s getting picked every week, but not when he’s sitting on the bench, it’s a good job the rest of our bench don’t have that attitude

A player that is happy to sit on the bench is not much use to us or anyone else.

Frank Lampard just would not pick Doucoure even though we were absolutely awful and nosediving straight for relegation.
Doucoure thought he could improve the team... he was right.

🤣 I’m sure nobody is happy sitting on the bench, but it’s called being professional and sends terrible message to young players and to do that when on 100k a week is scandalous. And doucoure has been great in terms of goals under dyche,
As he’s playing off DCL,
He also had some poor performances under dyche to.

And under Carlo, Rafael and Lampard playing as a midfielder, he was poor. Obviously Lampard didn’t want him in midfield and wanted someone else in the attacking midfield role. That’s his choice as a manager

Doucoure played in midfield not as a second striker before Dyche started his FIFA career mode with him and was largely a nothing player with absolutely no end product, both for Lampard and for Ancelotti, as it's a more punishing role.

Credit to Dyche for getting the best out of him but we need a more creative player behind the striker. Quick to forget how many shots/chances/passes he misses as his technique is a coin flip on a good day, too.

I agree we need better but that wasn't the point of what I said.

He was unhappy under FL sitting on the bench every week when we were losing our place in the league... he was right to be unhappy.

Regarding our team at present we do not have a single player that I would call a genuinely creative player and it shows with the low number of chances we create.
We have young players like Garner and Onana who have lots of strengths but are not naturally creative.
If we can bring in a player this month we need someone who can make chances.

Was he? Or is this current knowledge applied to past events? He'd been between average and crap for 2 years and was benched for a reason, bought as a CM, played as a CM, had a great engine, poor technical skills, benched.

Compared to him, Garner is the football DaVinci - it's not about some unreal talent, it's about knowing how/when to pass, which he doesn't for most the time mate, is all.

Sadly we can't bring anyone and we're more or less stuck with him anyway, so this is a kind of pointless discussion lol

I think Gomes has been great in that role. Hasn’t he scored 2 in 3 games worth of minutes?

Yeah, but the problem for Gomes is physical consistency - he's unable to play too often, etc.

I'm aware it's not realistic to expect us to have someone technically gifted but also with Doucoure's engine given our current situation, and we have to make do with what we have, but the fact Gomes, Harrison, et al, have stepped up in his position and were as good or better in certain things means he's not as irreplaceable as he's being made out here, and certainly not as irreplaceable as Dyche seems to make him be by changing the way we play when he's not fit.

Doucoure was decent under Ancelotti. Our nose dive down the table towards the end of Ancelotti’s last season coincided with an injury to Doucoure.

He was, but he was an absolute water carrier and nothing more, because Ancelotti saw his strengths (in the setup he wanted to play of course).

Not saying it's not an important quality or anything like that, just that for certain setups he has limitations - for example when ball retention and forward passing is required.

Some people don’t seem to know the difference between a centre midfielder in a two and attacking midfielder/split striker/number 10. Whatever you want to call them. As a centre midfielder doucoure is 4th choice, you could argue 5th if Gomes gets back to some form, though like you say he can be a liability as one of a midfield two, like doucoure, but for different reasons.

Dyche plays a style That suits doucoure, he’s happy with 35% possession, wants the majority of his players to be big and strong and run all day. Lampard wanted something different, he tried iwobi and was probably hoping to get something out of dele. And doucoure wasn’t good enough in a two to get in ahead of Gana, garner and Onana

It was clear from Doucoure getting straight back in under Dyche that he was fully fit and ready to go the whole time we were all waiting for Lampard to get the boot. He was a professional, keeping ready for his chance but he was a human and was frustrated to not get his chance whilst we were god awful. If I’m managing a team, I want every one of my subs ready and desperate to contribute.
