Ademola Lookman

It's a significant profit. Lookman cost about £11m and had a 4.5 (5 for accounting purposes) year contract.

With two years left on his deal, the accounts give Lookman a current value of £4.4m

We've sold him for 25m euros, or just over £22.5m on today's exchange rate

Means the accounts are going to show a profit of a touch over £18m for him - that's good going for a lad who hasn't really kicked on here (even if we all know he has talent)

Using the same methodology, we've made a profit of about £8m on Vlasic

The "net spend" is far less important to us these days than the accounting profits and losses

the 11m would have included all the add ons which theres no way he met

Not really tho Dave, it was Silva and brands first season and they obviously saw something in him they thought they could develop. For whatever reason he hasn’t forced his way in and we are getting basically the same money that was offered last year. If they sold him and he turned into a 50m player over the last year you would have been straight into brands for letting him go to early without looking at him. Signing sandro, bolasie, mirrallas extension.... they were bad decisions not keeping a young player to see if he could push on and getting the same fee ( which is double what we paid) as we were offered last year.
There's no dressing up a piooir decisions. If "ifs and ands were pots and pans...."

Bernard is massively overrated by fans who act like they’ve never seen a flair player before, 1 goal all season and 15 goals in 95 in the Russian league. Lookman is the far better dribbler, goalscorer, creator/playmaker and quicker as well, no comparison
Pienaar was never one who delivered amazing stats for us but was a brilliant player and, more importantly a brilliant player for us.

He worked his socks off, created space for others and would often assist the assister, so to speak. Bernard reminds me of him quite a bit. Lookman may have more potential, but he's not better now, and after all the money wasted during the Moshiri era, it's clear that we need to be recouping money in order to move the squad forward. I'd rather we kept him, but Lookman is one of our few assets we could actually stand to lose, as our players seem to be split between being vital or utterly useless to us - Lookman occupies the gap inbetween, so he will have to go tbh.

The only thing that would really wind me up is if there is no sell-on clause, as he COULD go all the way to the top. If we don't put one of those in, it would be very bad business imo.

That’s exactly my point, I’ve even seen some people claim he’s world class when in reality he would struggle to make the bench for every top 6 side

Depends how broad you want to define the term “world class”. If he’s world class, I suppose the likes of Lamela, Lallana, Mkhitaryan and Mata would be too (all of whom are better than Bernard). I don’t want to exist in a world where that’s the case.

I didn't say he was a striker. He does add to the attack though.
I just assumed you were replying to the question that specifically asked what striker.

Do you think Tielemans would have come here then? Do you think we’d have been able to promise him first team football? (Which id assume would be priority for a loan player).

Would you prefer to have batshuyhi and gabbiadini here then instead of waiting for a better target? Do you think they are much better than what we have?

Where's the contradiction there?
How is almost doubling your money on a player who has hardly kicked a ball for us a bad decision? Its great business, they had a season with him and now hes obviously not in there plans, a bad decision would of been letting him go before having a close look at him..
The good business was done by Walsh in buying him for a bargain. Good buisness from Brands would have been assessing the lad's mood and getting shut asap last summer when the fee went up to £20+M.

I'd have brought in a striker on loan last January. We desperatley needed an extra dimension to our attack...STILL DO.

@davek at what point does Silva take some of the responsibility?

I'm willing to bet that if Silva told Brands he had no plans for Lookman and could use the funds elsewhere then Brands would have likely sold

What it looks like to me is that Silva wanted to see if he could make it work with Lookman and Brands allowed him to do so

Just like letting Dowell go out on loan was a bad decision to you?

Clubs are really beating our door down for him aren't they?

Sometimes Dave, it’s best just to accept the people being paid to do this might actually know a tiny bit more than you. I think as an individual, once you have grasped that particular concept you may find a bit of inner peace and stop making mountains out of mole hills.

I really don’t know what type of spell Bernard has put on this fanbase, he was a free signing remember and yet every CL or top 6 club rejected him, makes you wonder

It was more about the signing on package deal he wanted because
Inter supposedly baulked at the signing on fee he was after and wages, so wouldn’t say he was free.

He’s a good, skilful, hard working player who now needs to add goals to his game to go to another level.
