2020/21 Alex Iwobi

Football fans generally go with the obvious - the highlight reels. They instantly forget everything else.

So Iwobi does two things well in a game = he played well.

I learned that with Lukaku. And before that I learned it with Moyes - I got slated on here when we beat Manchester City 2-1 under him, because I had the audacity to be outraged at how he shut up shop when we took the lead, recognising the pure lack of ambition. But we won the game, that's all that mattered to most on here - the bigger picture didn't matter.

Or, you massively over-complicate what is actually a relatively simple game.

I learnt from Lukaku and the years of pain that followed him leaving while we had no goalscoring striker, that passing and link-up play are not the most important part of a striker's game. It's the goals. I'm all for stats and detail when they're actually valuable, but sometimes the topline numbers are what actually matters and the minutiae is precisely that.

I don't really get this idea that he did nothing aside from two moments. No, he didn't create a goal every time he got the ball but he was largely decent. And I especially don't get this idea that he isn't doing anything when we were defending. As always the numbers don't really back that up as he had 4 interceptions and won 2 tackles. But I don't really get how people are seeing that either.

His pass completion rate was 57%. For the first 20 minutes on the pitch he barely completed a pass - I'm 99% sure his first successful pass was the assist.

You're going to have to show your work on this one because what I see has his pass completion at 83%

28 passes. 16 accurate. 1 key pass.

57%.

Unless that is broken. But it correlates with what my own eyes saw.

Can only play who is in front of you. I just thought it was worth pointing out that match because before you told me that Rom is terrible and everything he does is actually down to Lautaro.

Nope, I said any success Inter have in big games will be because of the likes of Lautaro.

Flat-track bully Lukaku scoring against the cannon fodder of a glorified SPL standard league isn't news to me. He's made a career out of it.

Had a solid game yesterday, not sure why people are still moaning. Created 2 of our goals, firstly with the assist to James then an inch perfect through ball to create the chance for the 4th. If he keeps that form up he's a solid and dependable option in the squad. Iwobi has always been a talented player but his biggest issue throughout his career so far has been consistency and application particularly in big games, if anyone can get that out of him it's Carlo. It is a squad game and we need to back these guys - I know for a fact that almost every player reads social media and forums after games. Let's not tear their confidence down after not instantly filling Richarlison's boots to perfection. ;)

There'll always be some vague factor you can never quantify people can latch on to with Lukaku.
