2023/24 Amadou Onana

I don't know if Onana has been practicing his penalties and it's his preferred technique but clearly it went horribly wrong. Plenty of regular penalty takers have great success with a similar technique but I bet they have practiced endlessly.

I fully expect that he learns from the experience and the next time he slots - hopefully he gets the opportunity to put it right with us.

He's still a young player and I'm sure Dyche will be in his ear in the right way.

He would do a solid job until the end of the season and it might be a case of needs must if the club require further funds - I would rather keep Branthwaite.
you don't swap a 21 year old like Onana for a 28 year old, that's not good recruitment I doubt they would loan him anyway when Wolves are apparently offering them money for the player. As for Branthwaite he will stay as I don't think clubs will pay what we want for the player.

As penalties go it was horrendous. It reaked of him having watched the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Jorginho and thinking “I can do that” without any practice.
Hopefully it’s the wake up call he needs at 22 in order to ensure he becomes a force in midfield and not a Pogba-lite without anything to show for it in his trophy cabinet.

I was questioning this lad last season but no-one can fault his efforts and professionalism this season. Yes the penalty wasn't great, in fact it was awful. But forget it, its gone now, no need to get on his case. It was hardly the world cup final was it. I'm pleased we have him and I have felt he's played well for us in most games this season and improving all the time. He will learn from this and not do it again

Maybe we haven't read the same posts, but I don't see character assassination. I see people who have made a judgement based upon what was before them. I wouldn't expect Garner, or even less so Tarkowski to make that mistake, that's the difference. People all around me, myself included, expected Onana to try something like that because of his manner. That same manner has absolutely gone some way to make him the success that he is, and will also go some way to ensuring he improves well beyond his current level. He made a mistake, as I said before, I hope he doesn't make it again. We're out, we move on.

I think its really unhelpful to the conversation to try and imply racial undertones (which is what I understand you are doing, please tell me straight if you are not) in how people are reacting to this and I find it really disingenuous of you to do so. I feel that the vast VAST majority would have reacted the very same way if somebody from a very different cultural background, but with the same 'swagger' had done the same. This is about an Everton player and their actions in that moment, it is absolutely not about any "sub-conscious bias", most certainly not from myself, as you implied in an earlier post.

Lets just agree to disagree on this rather than fill up a thread with garbage.

Have a great Christmas. UTFT
TBH Belgian players of all backgrounds seem to do that stop start run up, whether it's something taught in Belgian academy's. Lukaku and Hazard did it, the reality is Garner should of taken the last penalty, he's the most skilful player in our team. As Fulham proved if you hit them hard enough it's hard for anyone to keep them out.

Next time you get a pen, don't try and be a smart ass. Just pick a spot and hit it so hard it will take the goalie in the back of the net with it. People who do that shuffle and tap in just look like complete prats especially when they miss which happens quite often.

Even Jorginho has had an horrific time of it from the spot since the last Euros. He missed penalties that effectively cost the Italians a World Cup place - and it was Jordan Pickford who stopped him winning the Euro final with a magnificent stop. I'm beginning to think Pickford is cursed. He would be Sir Jordan Pickford now and in a League Cup semi-final had his team-mates capitalised on his shoot-out displays in 2021 and last night. He had us in the winning position last night and kept England afloat in 21...

Best thing he can do now is put good performances in. It was a dreadful penalty and his body language was odd but the game is gone now, he can only look forward and we shall see what he’s made of mentality wise in the upcoming games.

Every player misses penalties. He probably did well in training at Pens that’s why he was 5th. Let’s not overreact by saying let’s see or drop him. Most England fans wanted Saka sent to the gallows for his miss at the Euros but with hindsight we now know Saka is the best RW in the country and arguably the world. So give Onana a break lads, everything happens for a reason and he’ll make it up to us one day soon.
It's not the fact he missed the penalty, like you say, it happens all the time..

It's the way he took the penalty, No care in the world. Like he would at the end of a training session, as he strolls of laughing with pickford.
