Such a bad take this. Fans are disappointed to a varying level and therefore are absolutely allowed to express their opinion. Some may say its views like yours that keeps us trophyless…you are still entitled to your view tho
We are trophyless due to having crap players. A fans view of things makes no difference one way or another.

Onana's attitude at times comes off like he is too good for Everton
When?

I see this brought up a lot? When he has done this? What attitude?

I have a hard time liking a godawful penalty with thinking you are too good for a club too. I cant see any player thinking "what can I do to show I am too good for a club today? I know, take a ridiculously bad penalty!"

It makes no sense.

Same for every single player at the club.

Actually every player at most clubs.
Depends on your definition of stepping stone. E.g., I don't regard Jordan Pickford as someone who views Everton as a stepping stone. Even if he joined another club in the summer he will have played 7 seasons for the club and most of those as England's number one. He is a servant.

Onana is in his second season at Everton. I predict he will stay for 2-3 seasons in total before jumping ship to a more attractive project hence the term stepping stone.

If one of the big boys had came in for Pickford during that time he would be off like a shot. They all would.

None of them are servants! They are commodities, the quicker we realize that the better.

He is a tremendous commodity of course.

I disagree about Pickford. He seems happy with his lot and reminds me of Big Nev in that way. We don't know if he has already rejected moves over the past 7 years. Some players will not automatically join the biggest sides if there's interest - Le Tissier snd Shearer are classic examples. I appreciate this is more of an old school mindset and times evolve and you are right that players are mostly commodities these days, yet there are still some servants out there. Di Canio turned down Man Utd as well.

Agree - it seems like showboating to me.

Having said that, anyone can miss a penalty. I remember Maradona missing one in a World Cup shoot out, Messi's missed a few, Pele missed 5 on the run late in his career. For us Alan Ball missed a few and I remember a League Cup semi at Bolton where Duncan McKenzie ran up, stepped over the ball, walked back and then pulled his shot wide - luckily we won 1-0 anyway.
I remember that McKenzie penalty, just as bad as Onana’s, mind you we got through to Wembley that night.

Every player misses penalties. He probably did well in training at Pens that’s why he was 5th. Let’s not overreact by saying let’s see or drop him. Most England fans wanted Saka sent to the gallows for his miss at the Euros but with hindsight we now know Saka is the best RW in the country and arguably the world. So give Onana a break lads, everything happens for a reason and he’ll make it up to us one day soon.

It was the quarters, a lot of big teams were out and the fact if he'd have scored we'd have went through.

Get what you're saying though.
Since 1984 I vaguely remember losing a semi final to Arsenal and the City semi final where the ball went out that's it for the League Cup in the last 38 years!!

Can't be arsed to read all the pages I've missed, but this about sums up my thoughts and then I'm done thinking about it.

1) I hate penalty shootouts. It's akin to playing a basketball game that goes to OT and then you have a free throw shooting contest. It's a stupid way to break a tie.
2) With that out of the way, guys are going to miss penalties for any number of reasons.
a) Sometimes you get unlucky simply because the GK gets lucky and goes exactly to where you hit the ball.
b) Sometimes you get unlucky because you smash it but just miss the goal and hit the post or blaze it over the bar, a la Baggio.
c) But sometimes you miss because you do something stupid like Onana did yesterday. It was not all that dissimilar to Maddison's miss vs us last season. Him scoring that would likely have sent us down.

Gana missed via B above. Totally fine with that. Onana's type of miss is one that is a mental error - it shouldn't happen.

Hopefully he learns from his mistake. He's been playing very well this season and we need him to continue to improve. He's a big part of the team, and we need him.

Personally, I think he'll learn from it.

Let's all move on

They didn't, he was given a great reception at away grounds including a standing ovation when coming on as a sub against Spurs.

The issue England fans had was why Saka even took the penalty not about him personally but questioning Southgate and his decision making when there were other senior pros that offered to take a penalty in the first five.

If the keeper had gone the other way, he'd have scored
Garner or Tasks should have taken the 5th pen
etc etc
If my Aunty had balls.........

IMO, the league pays greater weight to our season this season as we've been asked to get 50 points for an accepted survival point rather than 40. The league is, and has to remain, our greatest priority for the next 2-3 seasons due to the increased revenue we'll see from BMD. The cup would have been nice but this wasn't a final, it was a Quarter Final.

We need to collectively dust ourselves down and go again. Onana being in the team is a better squad than him not in it therefore I'll be cheering him on regardless of his weak attempt pen.

People deal with pressure in different ways. I can assure you he was probably bricking it and was trying to look as calm as possible to help him process the situation and get the result he wanted. To succeed in top level sport players need unshakeable self belief bordering on arrogance. Tightening up is not an option. The character assassination on here by many is completely uncalled for and I don’t think it would be happening if Garner or Tawkoski had done the same thing. Some people have preconceived prejudices for whatever reason.
Maybe we haven't read the same posts, but I don't see character assassination. I see people who have made a judgement based upon what was before them. I wouldn't expect Garner, or even less so Tarkowski to make that mistake, that's the difference. People all around me, myself included, expected Onana to try something like that because of his manner. That same manner has absolutely gone some way to make him the success that he is, and will also go some way to ensuring he improves well beyond his current level. He made a mistake, as I said before, I hope he doesn't make it again. We're out, we move on.

I think its really unhelpful to the conversation to try and imply racial undertones (which is what I understand you are doing, please tell me straight if you are not) in how people are reacting to this and I find it really disingenuous of you to do so. I feel that the vast VAST majority would have reacted the very same way if somebody from a very different cultural background, but with the same 'swagger' had done the same. This is about an Everton player and their actions in that moment, it is absolutely not about any "sub-conscious bias", most certainly not from myself, as you implied in an earlier post.

Lets just agree to disagree on this rather than fill up a thread with garbage.

Have a great Christmas. UTFT
