Onana will not be with Everton long term - it's a stepping stone for him. Let's just get that reality out there.

In the circumstances, Dyche could show the courage of his convictions and back up what he says like he isn't one for players dancing around when they score goals by selling him. It sends a message to the other players to not act like clowns when those actions lose a game/cup tie and the potential of the team winning a trophy.

It's extreme but it would set a tone of we are a serious football club and along with moving into a luxurious new stadium in 18 months, we are winning silverware going forwards. Not a clown show laughing stock stepping stone for players and opposing fans.

But yes, let's just brush it under the carpet and focus on staying in the league 7 points clear with +2 goal difference from three really bad teams with the potential addition of 1-10 points.

I just hope Fulham don't draw Middlesbrough in the semi finals.

I have an alternative viewpoint re being a stepping stone. Onana is far from the best player in our team right now and there is no reason to suspect his ability will outgrow EFC. Needs to prove himself week in and out and, at present, several of our players are doing this better.

I've absolutely no idea why you would say that though, it's a completely bizarre take. He used a completely normal penalty technique and missed. Big deal. Accusations of arrogance imply a dislike of the players attitude which isn't justified and seems to have an ulterior motive (maybe subconscious bias?)

I'm not sure what you're getting at here, I mean, I have an idea, but would be very surprised to see somebody stoop to this level to try and win an argument, so I'll give you the benefit of a doubt and just ignore it.

I disliked the way that he took this penalty, just to try an clarify so that you don't start throwing wild accusations about, I also dislike it when other players from other teams and backgrounds do it, i just affect me less.

It was a nonchalant attitude. Honestly, the moment he walked up I knew he had missed it, I knew that Gana would miss as well. I'd say I was much more confident that Garner would score, but I fear what you'd accuse me of. He gave me Mirallas vibes, in the same way that Mirallas wanted the penalty that he missed, it felt as though Onana saw it as his moment, not the teams moment.

I don't mind arrogance in a footballer, it can in fact be a really positive trait, but that moment never required arrogance, it required assurance. Strike the ball true and on target. Yes he got it wrong, of course he dint mean to miss, but the technique he used, if not executed perfectly more often than no leads to a miss or a save. If you put your foot through it, in many cases even if the keeper guesses correctly, its past him before he can stop it, as we saw on at least 2 occasions last night. Your margin of error is also smaller.

BUT. All this aside, he's a very good footballer with a lot more to learn. I hope that he learns it here and continues to improve. We learn faster by our failures than our successes. On to the weekend.

Amazing that for a hundred years players could just run up to a ball and slot a penalty away. Now it’s a hop/skip/jump/dance and a side foot to the keeper.
Never saw Le Tissier, Julian Dicks or Unsworth do all the messing about.
Agree - it seems like showboating to me.

Having said that, anyone can miss a penalty. I remember Maradona missing one in a World Cup shoot out, Messi's missed a few, Pele missed 5 on the run late in his career. For us Alan Ball missed a few and I remember a League Cup semi at Bolton where Duncan McKenzie ran up, stepped over the ball, walked back and then pulled his shot wide - luckily we won 1-0 anyway.

Really like this squad and what Dyche has done with them. They aren't overly talented but they are gritty and work hard. Onana's attitude at times comes off like he is too good for Everton and he probably knows he'll be off to a top 6 side soon enough, but that penalty just summed up Onana's attitude. Put your foot through the ball, don't roll right to the keeper. Go ahead and blast me all you want, the middle finger button is just to the right.

People deal with pressure in different ways. I can assure you he was probably bricking it and was trying to look as calm as possible to help him process the situation and get the result he wanted. To succeed in top level sport players need unshakeable self belief bordering on arrogance. Tightening up is not an option. The character assassination on here by many is completely uncalled for and I don’t think it would be happening if Garner or Tawkoski had done the same thing. Some people have preconceived prejudices for whatever reason.

If that ends up being the case then I will hold up my hands and stand corrected. I would be amazed if he stays at the club beyond next summer.

It was an unacceptably stupid pen. Baffling frankly. But he's also been one of the better players we've had since he joined and I'm not crapping on him for a single stupid error of judgement. Anyone jumping on him while giving a pass to bulk of the team who offered way less then Onana did during 97mins of football prior to the pens need to get their heads in order.

Must be good to finally have a target for all that rage that’s been building since we’ve been good.

Must be angry about something at all times to justify miserable outlook on life.
Such a bad take this. Fans are disappointed to a varying level and therefore are absolutely allowed to express their opinion. Some may say its views like yours that keeps us trophyless…you are still entitled to your view tho

Or Ray Stewart at West Ham. Put the ball down and hammer it into the roof. Nuff said, no drama, no Riverdance, no "look at me" contempt for everyone else.
