American looking for Premier League team to support

tbh the op sounds like one of them baptist church nutters from the states. she doesn't like beer and gambling and knocks about with kopites. she's defo in a cult.
Actually, I'm one of the people the Baptist Church nutters hate. Proud registered Democrat, child of immigrants, non-religious, anti-guns, support same sex marriage, support abortion rights, support universal healthcare access, etc etc.

I don't like beer because my father went into violent rages after having alcohol, and I was hit by a drunk driver when I was a teenager. I don't like gambling because I've seen people destroyed by casinos, and I remember vividly when Andres Escobar was murdered. (The World Cup was in the US that year, and that was the first time I watched a football match.) Some people suspect he was killed by people who lost money gambling on the game.

But the shirt sponsorship isn't a dealbreaker for me, merely a con. I'm sure all the shirt sponsor companies do some things I don't like.

It has nothing to do with my religious views, as I don't have any religious views.

The Baptist Church nutters are riled by the fact that the World Cup was embraced in the US because it's popular among the growing Hispanic population. And because they're stupid.

Think uve answered the question in regards to everton by asking the question and especially the fact uve had to make ur own negatives list!

United are a team for glory-hunter fans, 95% of their worldwide support is just people who only support them because they're usually a team on top. It's just an easy option for a person to say they support Man Utd if they have no emotional attachments to a team. For this reason everyone hates Man Utd and their fans really, even if they're begrudgingly respected for their achievements.

Villa are a good club for the most part but in recent years they've completely fell away, nobody takes them seriously anymore in terms of them being a "big boy".

Stoke are a solid team from a small town but they have an horrendous reputation because of their style of play, they injure so many opposition players. You'll have a very tough job finding a neutral who likes Stoke.

Arsenal. A club many respect but a team people have begun to dislike more and more in recent years. They play great football but always fall short of winning the big competitions because their squad is always lacking a star-player or two. Their manager Arsene Wenger in universally regarded as an annoying whiner who throws a fit every time they don't win (when the majority of them time it's his fault). Their fans can often be annoying with their whining too. Most of them seem to think they have a born right to win things when sport doesn't work like that.

Tottenham, a team who are bit like marmite. Some like them, some don't. They're a very good team who almost always finish top 8 and are usually good to watch. They usually dish-out big contracts to players who don't deserve them though and sack managers very frequently which is bad for the sport. Many view them as a club with no patience and whom just want to buy their success now and not invest time into a project.

Liverpool, Christ I'll try not to rant here. A club that was in the 1970s and 80s what United are nowdays. Fantastic achievements but have fans whom no one likes because most are glory hunters. In fact most are just downright delusional, either about their club's status or their own players, like Arsenal but too a far greater degree I stress! As Everton fans we have of course never gotten along with them but in recent years their reputation has fell into the toilet and it was all their own doing. Now nobody likes them or respects them really, their delusion and arrogance in defending the indefensible (regarding Mr Suarez especially) has tarnished their image worldwide. A club best avoided if I may offer you a dime's worth of free advice

Hope that helps. ;)

Hi Potentialfan.

I have been an international fan of Everton for 30 years now. I remember vividly in Australia at the time I started to watch the English League all my friends and family were Man Utd and Liverpool fans...most games on TV were following those teams thanks to our biased, bandwagon-jumping media down here.

For me, once I saw Everton play it was instant love really. I just felt something special and knew they were my team. As people say in here, I was born...not manufactured. Everything about the club is special. My nephew was born 11 years ago (to a Liverpool supporting father), and when he was old enough to warrant a football shirt and he was given the option of which team to support, the boy just knew! He loved the name. The colours. It just came naturally for him to tell his father I am Everton like my Uncle ;)

What do your instincts tell you? Just go with them.

My first time visiting Goodison in 1995 was the greatest sporting moment of my life. Over 40,000 in that amazing stadium produced more noise, atmosphere and passion that I have felt even in our AFL Grand Finals with over 100,000 at the MCG here. If you get a chance to watch this exciting team in a big game later this season at Goodison Park, you won't forget it any time soon.

And you can add this forum and its supporters to your Pros list. Whether our team is absolute rubbish or going through potentially exciting times as we may be on the brink of, this place is an amazing place to spend some time in and follow your club. Nowhere better online really.

Hope we have helped...feel free to ask any more questions if need.
Go The Toffees! :)

Aston Villa

Pros: Americans on past and current roster; allowing Brad Guzan to develop skill and experience that will help him in international matches and continue the line of quality American goalkeepers. Developing a team of world-class outfield players takes a long time, and in the meantime we’ll continue to need good goalkeepers

Cons: Shirt sponsor is gambling company, which preys on a serious and potentially catastrophic psychological problem and may contribute to a culture of match fixing and corruption; sounds like a snooty overpriced car

Further cons: Prime Minister David Cameron is allegedly a fan. Unlike the Smiths, Aston Villa haven't told him to do one, so are clearly woefully lacking in some aspect or other of their character.

Not sure if this is a serious question but here goes...

Don't choose a club based on your pro's/con's list...the players, sponsors etc come and go...but the club stays. Meaning...what matters really is the club...its heritage and what it stands for etc. It must be an issue that one love the club...not based on the players etc...that's secondary. If one does not love a club why then support a club?

Instead of researching the players and sponsors etc...rather put that time into researching the clubs themselves...their history and what made them what they are today through history...and in that process you will probably find that you might fall in love with a club. You have to fall in love with a club...the club has to speak to you...touch you...and you must feel part of it in heart and soul...else its a waste trying to support a club imo. Its like a love affair...nobody can tell you which club is best for you...you must experience it yourself. With Everton it just happens...its in your blood...something that speaks to you from within and once you experience that you will know you were chosen...if not then another club is best.

I can tell you one thing though...nothing will touch Everton where it truly matters. Find out why these quotes below exist...and once you know why I you might realize nothing compares to Everton. Difficult to explain in words to someone but tried :)

“Once Everton has touched you nothing will be the same.”

“I’d break every bone in my body for any club I play for but I’d die for Everton.”

“Evertonians are so enthusiastic about their players. It staggers me every time I go there. I might have started at Birmingham, but my soul is at Goodison”

“Football was never the same for me after I left Everton, although I always wanted to win, losing never really seemed to hurt anymore.”

“I used to stick the ball in the net and bow three times to the Kop. They never liked me doing that.”

“I was running back to the centre circle after I scored the second goal against Liverpool and pure elation welled up inside me. I remember thinking, “I just love this place – I want this place forever.”

As has been alluded to already in this thread:

Evertonians are born not manufactured.
They do not choose, they are chosen.
Those who understand need no explanation.
Those who don't, don't matter.

You'll find out quickly if you're chosen or not.

Trust me.

Brilliant....can't have put any way better. Very special club :)
