...I think Silva was particularly keen to get this fella on the pitch because he adds a passing and control dimension none of the other regulars have. Silva says he likes his no6 to ‘dictate the pace of play’ and that is what Gomes does.
Actually used his wrong foot and passed the ball. Not seen that in a wee while.

A promising start. Very comfortable on the ball and kept everything neat and tidy.
Grew into the game in the second half and showed what he can do in terms of incisive passing with that lovely one into Walcott before the one into Gylfi to spin it behind for Walcott's chance.
Would like to see more of that but that'll come as he settles into the team and league.

This is true, though in all fairness, Schneiderlin was boss for the first few months.
Agree with you on Gomes. A positive debut but he'll need time to settle in fully.

I really liked what I saw yesterday. Can only remember him giving the ball away once and that was a mis-hit rather than a poor choice of pass. He looks excellent at starting moves. Can't remember the last time we had someone able to do this from the middle of the pitch since Arteta...I'm aware that's getting carried away a bit but there's no harm in being excited!

..he really fizzes passes into the front players. I like that.
We've lacked tempo in the midfield for a long, long time so anyone can improve this and will make a marked impact on our play as a whole.
..I think that’s right, Phil. I actually said at half-time yesterday that we needed to up the tempo in the 2nd half and I noted Silva saying the same at the end. He’s also said he wants his no6 to set the tempo of the game and I agree that he looks like he’s finally found that type. I think it’s why he was so keen to get him into the team.
