..I think that’s right, Phil. I actually said at half-time yesterday that we needed to up the tempo in the 2nd half and I noted Silva saying the same at the end. He’s also said he wants his no6 to set the tempo of the game and I agree that he looks like he’s finally found that type. I think it’s why he was so keen to get him into the team.
He’s not a 6, though. Neither he nor Gana were pushing super high up the pitch, but Gomes was more consistently higher than Gana from what I saw. I’d say he was playing more like an 8. I actually think he was a bit below his usual standard, but fitness and familiarity will help. Think he’ll eventually get more comfortable pushing up higher once he realizes how good Gana is. Both Bernard and Walcott didn’t play their best games as no one seemed to want to take anyone on with the dribble. So our lack of goals didn’t have much to do with Gomes, but he will learn how to get over to the sides and overload effectively to help spring them. Felt that was lacking a bit.

Thought he had a good game.

1st half was a bit 'Welcome to the Premiership' but after a 15 half time he settled really well and used the ball efficiently, trying a couple of probing balls down the channels along with the more simple stuff.

...I think Silva was particularly keen to get this fella on the pitch because he adds a passing and control dimension none of the other regulars have. Silva says he likes his no6 to ‘dictate the pace of play’ and that is what Gomes does.
That Walcott chance straight after the missed pen shows what we have been missing, I think since Gareth Barry left. Two short forward passes and Walcott's in on goal. Easy when you have the right mix of players. Can't wait to see us away from home when we'll hopefully have a bit more space in front of us. Think we're going to be absolutely boss on the counter.

..yep, I was wondering if we might be suited to play away from home.

It's def cause for concern if we're heading for Gomes at 6. I don't think he's got the out and out defensive qualities for that position.
And it'd be my biggest concern with Silva - he's may just have too much of a reckless streak to him; he's a bit blinded to the defensive problems.
That may not be the case - we are only seeing the early stages of a work in progress. Addressing things in the right order is key and he might be starting to get it right. But there are enough examples to have doubts.

Its essential we find a player who is just as effective and comfortable defending in between the CBs as linking the play from defence to attack, whose reading of the play is as good or better without the ball as with it. Having this type of player is how you get to be more attacking, more confident.
Gana doesn't fit this either because for all the work he does, he's not good enough on the ball, and his attributes and mindset don't fit with him sitting as a back three, when needed.

Finding this type of player (Barrios maybe) can mean Bernard coming off the LW and into the midfield, with Rico moving back to his better position.
So for eg, Bernard, Barrios, Gomes in midfield becomes potentially very tasty, with Bernard (L) and Gomes (R) dictating the play in the half spaces.

The problem with this is what you do with Sig. Either you don't play with a 9 (in which case your relying on Bernard, Sig and Gomes to rotate through the position) or Sig is dropped for a 9.

he's a bit blinded to the defensive problems.

Huh?

From the word go, all the players have praised his defensive work and work from set-pieces. Yes, we got off to a rocky start at the back and there are still a few lingering issues but to say he's 'blinded' to problems is wrong.

Roberto was blind and refused to address them. Silva will, at least, try addressing them.
