2019/20 Andre Gomes

It could be. But I've tried to figure out what happened based on what I can find and it looks like his ankle is more or less normal until that moment. It could be pure coincidence but I don't know.
I"m pretty sure it was a Kevin Ware/Gordon Hayward situation where their foot/leg was in an exact awkward position to cause maximum damage when momentum/weight came down. Andre was going at speed and landed awkwardly while trying to evade Aurier coming in, which caused his ankle to pay the price. Essentially non-contact, but he was in that position 100% b/c Son put him there.

Looking closer I agree with this. Aurier doesn't make contact until after.

Just been reading twitter and can confirm that Spurs have more absolute idiots following them than we have following us.

The general consensus with them is a yellow because he went for the ball.

Well I'm afraid I've seen screenshots where the ball ain't even in the frame cause it's about 3 yards away. Anyone who genuinely believes he didnt want to leave one on Gones is utterly delusional and I've lost all respect.
What I keep seeing is this wham that it was a professional foul to stop a break or something.

Well it definitely didnt stop a break.

It was purely a childish lash out at a player in retaliation for a stray hand. Son now has to deal with the consequences of him knowing hes caused that injury to Gomes.

To be quite honest it just seems like a regulation foul that had unforeseen consequences. If it was an Everton player I would hope the red would be overturned too (though that would require the club standing up for itself)

...absolutely. No attempt to play the ball, it was a tackle of retribution. I’m sure Son meant no harm, but the consequences of the tackle have to be taken into consideration when determining the punishment. It was a deliberate foul and it has to be red because of the outcome.

if a driver drives without due care and attention he gets points, but if the outcome is a 3rd Party injury, then the punishment is more significant.

A picture can tell a 1000 words.

I rewatched it over and over, ive got my opinion.
I've changed my mind and Aurier isnt at fault. But I don't think the answer to "Did it endanger a player's safety?" can be "No" when the foul breaks the players leg. I get the idea that these types of fouls happen a lot but that doesn't mean they should be looked at as not bad, they are and need to be more consistently yellows, and it doesn't mean that extreme circumstances shouldn't he handled differently.

I dunno. Sometimes the severity of the outcome has to factor in. And although the foul in and of itself was a yellow (it's not like he flew into his shin over the ball with two feet), it definitely was the beginning of the cause of the injury.

And because of this, Son and Spurs should just accept the situation, take the 3 games, and move on.

It's just bad optics, IMO

The problem with this argument is that the laws of driving and the laws of the game aren't transferable: was the tackle, by the laws of the game, a red card offence?

Objectively, it's quite difficult to say that it was anything than a yellow.
Except that simply isn’t true. At all. The laws aren’t transferable but the argument is. There is a law in football which says you get a red card for endangering an opponent, it’s been posted on here literally dozens of times today. Kicking a player who then breaks their ankle because you knocked them off balance means you endangered them. It seems fairly clear cut to me.

Yeah, but rules are rules. It’s a contact sport and sometimes accidents will happen. Don’t think he deserves getting dragged over hot coals for it.
