Digne and Mina were also not good enough for them but they werent booed every match and taunted in the street.

Digne especially has shown hes a top class full back while Gomes has shown hes a crab.

...Gomes is a fine footballer. If you’re a wide player you’d always think you’re in the game because Gomes has the ability to spread the ball left or right. I remember Ray Wilkins being called a crab, but he had a decent career here and abroad. Bracewell and Reid would win it and give it to Sheedy and Steven. Nobody complained.

As far as I’m concerned, Gomes‘ problems are more to do with his lack of mobility and pace. As I’ve said for an age, we have too many players with no powers of recovery. Gomes is one of those, he’s easy to go past and once your past him you’re away.

We don’t have another player with his passing range, it’s certainly why he never gets dropped but we desperately need energy in that area of the pitch. I wouldn’t be getting rid, his type of player is useful but we need energy if we’re going to progress.

All of the players you mention could put a tackle in mate and Wilkins passing was another level to Gomes.

Youre dead on about the mobility/pace but is he worth building a midfield around?

Not for me.

If we were playing a 3 man midfield I could see how you would "accomodate " Andre if you had a defensive sitter and box to box midfielder.

But we don't and won't under Carlo and in any event Andre is not a special enough talent to build your team around.

They bought him cos they saw something in him. That was the point.

And I'm pretty sure the Valencia fans aren't saints in hounding bad players re Gomes.

Anyway, it's down to Carlo to make the decisions. If he's not good enough, he'll replace

Moussa Dembele was very similar on the ball (albeit better off it).

It's not as if we've never seen a good game from Gomes. We all have. Which is why he's worth supporting and persevering with.

Needs somebody beside him capable of doing the leg work and ball winning. His range of passing is superb but he can't drive forward with the ball and screen the defence.

I think he's quite good over a few yards: he can receive the ball in a tight space, show some quick feet and drive into space over 5 yards or so.

He's not showing this at the moment because of well documented poor form.

Defensively though, absolutely agree. i also think the shouts of him not being suited to a 2 in CM are worth consideration, but only off the ball. On the ball it's clear as day we don't play 442.
