2019/20 Andre Gomes

nah you're missing context here.
we've all seen with our own eyes him dictate the tempo of a game and show his best form.

Moussa Dembele was very similar on the ball (albeit better off it).

It's not as if we've never seen a good game from Gomes. We all have. Which is why he's worth supporting and persevering with.
I’ve seen Barry Horne have a good game. It doesn’t mean we should persevere with him on the back of it. I’ve seen Gomes have about 6 good games out of 40. The last one was a long time ago. If we want to get better as a football club, we can’t allow players to throw in stinkers for games on end, keep on telling ourselves they’re good because of one decent performance moons ago, then moan when we get beat. Major problem with our football club is we are a player perform well, and we instantly class him as quality and he’s engulfed in our minds as a good player no matter what. It’s so wrong. A good player is someone who produces consistently and when we need it most. This guy ticks neither of these boxes. Crazy talk. I told everyone Bernard was bad about 12 months ago. I’m doing the same with this fella. No good and a squad player at best in 6 months.

It's hard this. I feel sorry for the lad because it feels like everyones going in on him after the last couple of games and i'm not entirely sure why because he's honestly not doing a lot different to what he's done for the majority of his time here. I totally agree with you that when he's good he's very good. He is head and shoulders above anyone else we have - and most of the league to be honest - when he's at his best. It's just so rare though. I reckon he's had 2 good games this year, West Ham and Wolves at home. That's really bad. I genuinely don't know if it's form or if it's just the way he is, because he's been like this for 2 seasons (injury notwithstanding). I'm sure he'd be better with better players around him, but to be fair, so would I. It's not really an acceptable excuse for a professional footballer playing like he is at the moment.

Yet again, you're missing vital context to the situation though.

1. His injury
2. The stop-start nature of the restart
3. The form of the team under Silva before the injury
4. The change of management and his role within the team
5. The constant change of his partner
6. The fact the other CMs at the club available are so ill-suited to him

As ever, a very reasonable post mate.

Barry Horne would have Gomes in his pocket.

The point i think is that we signed Gomes because he showed he could have great games.

We also probably expected him to improve after that season and be more consistent. With his nightmare in Barca alot of the fans (including me) thought he would be quality over a period of matches if he was happy.

Sadly hes the same as when he first arrived. The injury hasnt changed his inability to tackle, lack of assists/goals or even shots...nor has it altered his lack of what appears to be effort.

He continues to shove players in the back when they already release the ball after not attempting a tackle...that to me is the sign of someone who doesnt want to make the effort.

Seems like a lovely bloke...

Said a while ago that he hasn't done anything since he's arrived maybe one ok game. Goes missing in away games. Got attacked by the Gomes lovers for that. He's very slow, dosnt get up to support the front 2,. And is easy to get past. Is a nice passer of the ball but struggles with the physicality of this league. Haven't lost all faith in him yet. Hopefully we buy 2 Good midfielders. One who can do all the work and another who has the physicality to support Gomes. I'd give Gomes another year to improve

Thing with him is you could drop him into a decent side and he wouldnt look out of place. I wouldnt say that about any of the rest of our midfield.
He hasnt looked at it since coming back but he's still the only midfielder id keep. The rest of them can go.

But again mate, with respect, that's not the reality of the situation. You're simplifying what's going on and the answer you get is "he's not very good" / "he's a crab" etc.

You're right - we signed him because he showed in a new team and a new league he could have great games.

The injury has and is absolutely playing on his mind when he's tackling. I'm not talking about the ability to get to the ball. I'm talking about when he's there: that aggressiveness has gone. And it's not surprise when you think of his foot hanging off only a matter of months ago.

The lack of goals / assists - yes, 1 goal and 1 assist it's enough. But again, the reality of the situation is he played holding midfield under Silva. He started our attacks by picking up the ball from our CBs. With Gana next to him to pick up the ball when we lost, Gomes was our most deep-lying midfielder. Just for completeness (not to be condescending): that's the midfielder furthest from the opposition's goal. It's no surprise he's therefore got a measly goal return. In his best patch for Valencia as i've said elsewhere, he played much further forward and it was demonstrated in his goal return.

This observation:

"He continues to shove players in the back when they already release the ball after not attempting a tackle...that to me is the sign of someone who doesnt want to make the effort."

...is absolutely crazy. I'd imagine you've played the game yourself? A presumption on my part. You will know that you being tired, you being out of form leads you to do stupid things in desperation. To not think as clearly as you did when you are firing on all cylinders. That's what pre-season is for, to add volume to your legs and brain. He's unfit. Clearly.

There's lots of things rightly or wrongly you can throw at Andre Gomes but not caring is just nuts and I honestly believe you don't believe that. You're just being silly mate.

He’s slow and can’t tackle, what makes people think these are attributes to work in an understaffed 4 man midfield? We need exactly the opposite.

This is without even considering he’s toast since his injury.

I'd sell now if we can make our money back. His lack of pace/mobility make him unsuited to this league. Maybe Serie A would be a better place for him but if he can't overcome his mental fragility he'll struggle anywhere he goes.

Needing pace to make it in the PL is a complete myth. Juan Mata, David Silva, Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard, Fernandinho all be huge successes amongst many others despite having no turn of pace. He's playing a role he can't play, a defensive midfielder, he's never played that before. Needs a good partner alongside him to allow him to push further forward.. think a 3 would suit him best.

This does ignore the part though of him being up and down for most of his time here. Honestly the more I see him do this the more I just think Gueye was fantastic and his doing the heavy lifting was most of what was good last year.
