The definition of a good football player is how good and how fast one is to perceive (see), process (find choices), and to perform (technique). This depends on the ball, space, teammates and opponents. If you take away the sidelines and opponents, then you only have the ball and teammates.

Then all that remains is a mechanical action (perform), and then it is no longer football. So it's not really a mystery, Gomes is good at performing mechanical actions, certainly really good at isolation drills, but unfortunately it's not football.
He was fantastic v Brentford, just can't do it twice on the bounce can he.

I'm not sure it is that, he didn't have as much space in midfield last night. He tried many times to keep hold of the ball by cheating it or trapping it and turning with it but the Barcodes players were on to him quickly enough to snatch it off him, he needs to mix the play up more between trying to keep it or a quick lay off, playing the way he is facing. I can see he is doing what FL wants but when the opposition have identified a playing trope like that, he is easy to close down and nick the ball. Once again, a two man midfield lacked support.

He had periods yesterday where he had some good involvements, so it's not just misery. I would have liked to use him as a DM, but then he must have simplified his game. Uses too many touches, especially in small spaces and when he has the wrong body position. Maybe Gomes as No. 6, No. 8 Van de Beek, and Ali as No. 10. Not ideal, but then you have at least the best ball players in the middle.

Agree. He uses too many touches, and often activates his opponent's pressure triggers.

Our defence needs cover though, we need someone who will just sit and protect it to be honest.

When you're as immobile as Gomes is you need to have 100/100 awareness and vision, thats how players like Pirlo lasted so long

Gomes doesn't have it, which is why he gets caught out and inevitably fouls and gets yellow cards

Exposed once again by an organised midfield press.

He's sound when he's given time & space to do his thing - but just too slow to work in a congested environment.

Yes, as I say, he needs to simplify his game. Not ideal against the best teams, but against teams we should be able to compete with it can work. Allan is not exactly a Pirlo either.

Defensively, I think we can get away with it against the second best teams, the teams we have to beat to survive. But then we have to defend ourselves more with the ball, and incorporate a better collective pressure higher on the opponent's half of the field + counter pressure. That is also what Lampard wants. At the same time, I'm unsure, precisely because of what you mention, but if we manage to have more of the ball, we do not have to defend ourselves so much.

I know he didn't excel at Barcelona but it's still staggering that a former Barca player cant complete simple passes. Frantic environments incapacitate his ability to function. If a team plays static football he can be decent.

I agree, ball retention will be key to us, the less they can attack the less we have to defend = less pressure on the terrible defence,

It's surely the theory thats going to have to see us through to be honest

Does it once or twice a season, like I said in the match thread...
(Gomes) Average players have the odd good game - Good players have the odd average game (Richarlson)
Got to be honest i'd say Richarlison has had more average than good recently

Needs to be fined every time he needlessly pulls a player back and gets booked for it. Does it almost every game because he's not mobile enough to catch up with even the slowest of midfielders.

I like Gomes, he’s good player but he needs the midfield built around him. As many have already said, if we can’t buy him time on the ball he becomes a complete passenger, sometimes a liability with his lack of mobility

It’s not he can’t do it twice on the bounce, he just can’t cope under pressure which he will get in 8 games out of 10.

He needs to go? He’s not cut out fur the premier league. Interesting lampard saying he found out a few things about his players, or words to that effect, in his presser. I’m sure if he could have 3/4 more of that team would have been subbed off
