2023/24 Andre Gomes

Not getting all this hate for Gomes.

Yeah he’s a bit too slow for the PL and looks very much a confidence player.

Still think he’d be useful as a squad player and would make the bench a bit stronger and can hold onto the ball when you are trying to close a game out.
Bringing on Gomes to see out a game would be madness. He’d more likely get caught in possession and get booked giving away a free kick putting us under pressure than hold onto the ball.

I really like the guy and he had some great games in his first season or two but he’s not got it anymore.

Sounds like you are describing Holgate. Gomes can be quite useful in this role, especially as the only alternative is Onyango.

Not hate so much, as exasperation.

He's sadly guilty by association, one of a plethora of overpriced and average players purchased with the Moshiri largess.

Never the same player after that bad injury, but never equipped for the demands of the PL in the first place.

Remember the game at anfield we lost 1-0 when Pickford handed them an injury time winner. He was the best player on the pitch that day.

It was a long time ago now of course, but the fact he played 20+ games for Lille last season tells me he’s still useful as a back up.

We will never find out though, so good luck to the lad.

One of many who have been criminally misused and played out of position. He was never and has never been good in a midfield two. Dare I say it some of his best football came under Ancelotti when playing next to Allan and Doucoure who took the defensive pressure off him.

That said, hasn't got the legs to play in this league anymore. Far too slow and there have been many - far more technically gifted players including Cazorla, Ozil and Mata - who couldn't hack it when the legs went and he is certainly no different.

Staggered that anyone wants him to stay. He's a gaping hole in midfield. He can't run, he can't turn and he falls over all the time.
Here's Andre Gomes's last nine appearances for Everton (in reverse order):

Crystal Palace (H) - Dragged off half time at 0-2. (We go on to win 3-2)
Brentford (H) 2-3 - Dragged for Jonjoe Kenny on 71 minutes at 2-3.
Crystal Palace (A) 0-4 - Plays full 90.
Southampton (A) - Comes on half time at 0-0, we lose 0-2.
Newcastle (A) 1-3 - Dragged on 60 minutes at 0-2.
Aston Villa (H) 0-1 - Dragged on 51 minutes at 0-1
Norwich (A) 1-2 - Full 90.
Chelsea (A) - Dragged for Gbamin on 71 minutes at 0-1, we equalise on 74.
Crystal Palace (A) 1-3 - Plays the full 90

That is, for Andre personally, nine successive defeats to finish his time at Everton. I know people will say 'but we ended up winning v Palace and ended up drawing at Chelsea etc, but I guarantee the stats guys look at things like this. Unfortunately he is a liability.

The last time Andre Gomes started in an Everton league win was Arsenal away behind closed doors in April 2021, and even then he was hooked before we scored the winner.

The last time Andre Gomes started in an Everton league win AND WASN'T HOOKED BEFORE WE SCORED THE WINNER was West Brom away behind closed doors in March 2021.

As an advocate of "if he stays, he plays" (even just for 10-15 minutes in Gomes' case) it's hard to argue even for that when presented with the above.

Everybody can go back to that one game.
Tom Davies was class in the 4-0 against City.
Onana destroyed Arsenal in the 1-0 last season, dominated that game but hasn’t hit that level any other time.
Naismith came off the bench to score a hat trick against Mourinho’s Chelsea
Kone scored a hat trick once
Niasse won us some games with goals only he could have scored
Jelavic had a crazy purple patch when signed but then loads of dry spells

None of these players (except Onana who is young and can come good) were good enough to improve our squads and the same is true of Gomes right now.

In those Onana/Gana midfield positions I’d have Garner and Doucoure there over him.

In that ten position Doucoure has been playing I’d have Danjuma, McNeill, Beto (if Dom playing), Garner over him.

The lads on over 100k pw which isn’t his fault and I don’t begrudge him it but I’d rather he wasn’t here.
