Andy Gray: Martinez Not Helping Lukaku

Oh dear still arguing about Gray! I am not going to confer or deny him greatness but at the time he was a very influential players for us, can we not agree on that. and let the thread die.

There is a difference between being a very influential player and liking someone. I never had much time for Sharpey as a person, I've always thought he was a bit of a moaner, and much preferred players who get on with it, like Reidy or Baines. But I acknowledge that he was a cracking player for us.

"It's been a poor season, one the club needs to just get out of the way. Roberto should get to the summer and take time to reassess what's happened in readiness for next season".

Not that I'm arsed what he says, but I know a few here believed he was onboard with some crackpot notion of unseating our manager.

I can't stand Gray in all honesty. Hard to argue with what he's put.

I think what's important is Martinez is given the space to evaluate his own performance. In other professions this is called "professional development" or a "safe space" or some other buzzword. But the principle is correct.

To have a proper evaluation of what's going wrong cannot be done in 6 or 7 days, when around the players, in the City itself surrounded by the pressures of management.

At the end of the season he needs to get away on holiday somewhere and forget football for 2 weeks. Probably have another two weeks where he doesn't really go near the training ground after that. A proper break where he can consider what needs to happen without kneejerking.

It's horrible watching him at the moment. We need the end of the season to come. Move some players on, and start afresh next season.

You can take Andy Gray off your faltering Martinez out bandwagon. I suspect there'll be many more falling off it after Sunday.

I think he'l be eager to start analysing what went wrong as soon as the final whistle of the season blows.

For me it's not that complicated: the major issue has been the failure to adapt tp the European/domestic schedule. I notice Jagielka goes into more detail on this in the Echo today: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/exclusive-everton-fc-captain-phil-8805014

Obviously there's more to it than that (poor pre-season, transfer activity/inactivity, failure to keep consistent teams on the pitch), but that major problem wont be there next season, so the task of deconstructing this season isn't going to be a major issue.

My hope is that he hits the ground running in terms of filling key positions in the team as soon as the window opens (and get agreements in place even before then).

A month off?

Isn't that what half the problem was last year?

He fecked off to Brazil and left the shop untended at a time when he should have been paying full attention to Everton FC.

Let him have his fortnight in Majorca like the rest of us.....then back to his desk and knuckle down to doing what he us paid a King's ransom to do.

Most pundits seem to annoy even if they have played for the team you support. I am not keen on Andy Gray. Phil Neville or Martin Keown. Although with Keown you would have thought he had played for Arsenal all his career the way he goes on.
Arsenal fans cannot stand Paul Merson now.

Well yes, it is quite straightforward to someone with a clear head. I just worry though as with any of us when under the scrutiny he is under it is hard to think clearly.

You are correct Europe hasn't helped. To me it's simpler than that. Our top pro's have either under performed or been injured. Europe hasn't helped on the injury/fatigue front.

Howard, Distin, Mirallas, Jagielka, Eto were all disappointing. To a lesser degree Barry, Baines and Coleman have been below par. McCarthy has been injured too much. Osman and Peinaar have gone a season too far and Martinez has placed too much faith in them.

The younger players Stones, Barkley and Lukaku have all to varying degrees suffered as a result of this.

Of the senior pro's we need to move on the ones who are not on board with the manager. The ones who want to stay should, but there needs to be an appreciation we are starting from scratch next season.

In 2004/5 Lee Carsley emerged as a very central player in a new system from being a bit part player.

Europe has exacerbated our problems. We will be far more back to basics next season.

If I truly believed that martinez would access in the summer and realise that a lot of our problems are his own doing and style of play I'd be more than happy going into next season and seeing what he come up with.

Problem is I see martinez finding all sorts of reason that he and his philosophy is not to blame and it needs implementing more to get better results.

His time as a manager and specifically his time at Wigan shows us that is what is more than likely to happen.

I just hope he doesn't waste too much money in the summer that will affect the next manager who will likely be managing the team by October.
