2021/22 Anthony Gordon

This is it. Saw a post saying he’s not a top 6 player … none of our players are

Fact is if he gets 20 goals in the premier coming from the academy he’s a success. Right now he’s good enough to start for us which makes him a success. He’s also our best bet of survival as it stands
It’s just a shame his finishing is so poor atm. But he is growing with every game I feel. I hope he can net a few and save us.

I'll probably be in the minority here, but I'm just going to say it anyway.

Gordon's pros are that will give 100% every game no matter what. We'd probably be in a worse off position without him. His work rate in his own half is second to none, and he gets us going direct really fast. His passing generally speaking is good too, and he can win fouls.

Godron's cons are that he has no final ball. He'll kick it into the opponents legs, or fall over or when he should try to get past someone try to win a free kick, or crosses over them. I think he's actually wasteful. DCL/Richarlison barely scored because Gray, Gordon and Iwobi barely provide any service. Since the Leeds game, we just don't look like we're creating any chances.

Now I'm aware he's young and ahead of other kids playing, but I do think Lampard should have been more selective rather than playing every week, perhaps Gordon should have played in half the games and maybe come off the bench the other half.

While we're talking about Gray and Iwobi, Gray is basically a second Gordon and also doesn't create anything, but will run around and do defensive work. Iwobi is also similar, but perhaps has a little bit more creativity and can play a thru ball at times. We had Townsend who we should have used, and Deli is far more effective and comfortable on the ball. Deli put the ball on a platter for Iwobi and if he went a little earlier, we would have equalised.
He literally set up a sitter for Richarlison a game ago and he shanked. Obviously he can get better in the box but this is a massive overreaction.

For me, when I see people praising Iwobi and Gordon for running, it tells me why we are about to get relegated.
I understand it is all relative but to me they're offering more than that. It isn't good enough still, but it is better.

Where this is falling apart for me is that they are a side that cannot defend and doesn't have reliable goal scorers. Now maybe Gordon should be one of the reliable goalscorers but Richarlison and DCL refusing to show up this season really hurts.

More and more I consider the upsides of what relegation would mean.

Love the idea of pressing that big red reset button in the corner.

But im not stupid enough to ignore the very, very, very many downsides.

I'm right there with you. You get the opportunity to gut the squad and sell off a great number of useless players. You can hopefully build back with an emphasis on development. You can get rid of this notion that we're one or two windows away from competing because we will finally undeniably not be. If we can't do all this without going down then maybe we need to.

And at the same time I'm pretty sure the club would go under if they couldn't get back up inside of a few years. So that is really, really bad.

There are two points to note about Anthony Gordon.

1. He looks like Mr Logic out of Viz.

2. Diving is part of the modern game. Fine. But Gordon is terrible at it, totally unconvincing, like a comedy parody of a dove. He needs to learn to do it better or stay on his feet.

I watched all the incidents again last night but decided to hold off til I’d calmed down a bit. Happy enough to be told I’m way off here but…
He tried to win the pen in the first half. He should’ve had a pen second but I don’t think he was trying to score, I think he was trying to win the pen. And for the TAA tackle I’ve watched it slowed down and I’m convinced he hung a leg- TAA was trying to take him down so fair play but had he hurdled that we’d have had a proper break on.
Can’t help but worry that his first instinct isn’t to try and score but to win fouls. Maybe it’s the new generation? Kind of hoping someone will tell me I’m off the mark? Either way there’s a narrative forming around him after a great performance that isn’t about how he had TAA and Matip terrorised.

He dropped the corner onto Richarlison’s head that he shouldered wide from 6 yards out too don’t forget.
He did, I'm not trying to go crazy about anything he does on set plays though because they're massively inconsistent and he's just benefitting from the general incompetence in the team in that area.

The red heavy media would never allow that to happen
Gordon only ran past him over and over because Gordon tried to con a pen first half, fact!
