2022/23 Anthony Gordon

He had a very poor game, but he was clearly being played out of position and asked to job he isn't suited to. Not sure why that would make people think we should sell him, especially after a single game. He'll know he can do better than Saturday, and I expect him to improve.

I think he was a bit of a bright spark in an otherwise dull team last year. I'm not sure how he gets on in a (hopefully) better side this year, he and Gray are very similar they've both got pace but not a whole pile more than that. Think the fact that McNeil went for just £15m to us, albeit Burnley were relegated, and he was highly rated and a regular PL player for 3 years, he's only a few months older than Gordon, says all you'd need to know.

I think he's another Sean Longstaff to be honest, looks alright as a young player in an awful team and is touted at these mad values but just a year or two after Longstaff has lost most of his value.

Hold on - struggled with what? He missed a header first half and then ran at them with little to no productivity - penetrating and then going sideways to do nothing, colour me amazed, did it last season as well (mostly - he also occasionally does have productivity). To go with no finishing and inaccurate passes or lack of concentration - I know he's young, but it's a moot point to say he's amazing or something.

I absolutely look at those things and he annoyingly loses the ball too often to actually do anything about it - that or the pass doesn't have the proper weight on it. McNeil's played like 3 longer range passes and they're in the paths of people, Gordon's just aren't like that; crosses are also very Coleman, as in "hit and hope".

I can see a player in there, but you're making him out to be prime Cristiano Ronaldo, when he's simply planets away in every area, or at least "rough". Would love for him to come true and for your words to be gospel, but so far - nah.

With all that said, he's still somehow one of our best players, but that's due to us being shambolic.

The thing is mate, he is 2 years younger, and looked a lot better than Havertz for Chelsea.

I'm not saying he was faultless against Chelsea, but he had a good game. Carried the ball well, won the odd header. Needs to be more clinical.

I struggle to think of his bad finishing, or inaccurate passing, as he didnt have a chance.

I think people have an unrealistic expectation a 21 year can do.

If they offer the kind of money that Richarlison went for, then sadly, we would accept, but, I think it would have to be a bid of that kind of size. Lampard and his team seem to have very high hopes for this lad.

Both Silva and Kouli struggled with containing him with ball at feet running at them he got in behind a lot and penetrated. Also dont agree with the rest of your first paragraph, actually think he gies central to much and he should vary it bit. In terms of inaccurate passes, whose he aiming at, we lack a number 9, we lack a no 10, so hes left isolated waiting for Doucoure, Iwobi or the sven to come across. That context is important.

Second paragraph - dont really agree either, one or two examples of perhaps wrongly weighted passes but i wouldnt call it a feature of his game. Hes an infinitely better player then McNeill.

Not really arguing he's world class although i know you are hyperbowling to porlarise, im saying hes quality and his ceiling is high, he has the quality to become one of the best players in the league, certainly in our team if hes not already. That would be where i am at - without question. He has a very high ceiling. Things he does very few in the PL can do.

Ultimately i think hes very special, one of the best things to come out of our academy in a long time and we should feel very lucky and proud ot have him.

Like i say i dont have one doubt about this lad mate, time will prove it, he really excites me.

Agree to differ and all that.
Sake Neiler stop being nice, WE FIGHTING OR WHAT FFS?!

Agreed he's exciting as a prospect, same to me (despite probably looking like I'm a hater) - he's just SO far off being substantial, and he's not 18 anymore either. At 21 and a starter - I expect a bit more. CR7 was starting and dominating, had goals, had assists. Let's say he's half the potential player Ronaldo was - 4 goals in 50 games is not that great.

Also passing (for below post as well tbh) and crossing accuracy - don't mean in *this* game, mean in general. Either a brilliantly whipped cross or "foot like a 50p" cross, no inbetween, with 2 out of 3 being the 50p one it feels. Dom shouts at him for often when they play (which last season was about 5 times anyway), as the cross is often over or underhit.

Set pieces also suspect, but that's the Everton curse realistically, convinced it's not up to him lol or any of our players.

Again, not this game - overall so far. Played about 40 games last season like, not much to show for it other than "running at people" (and diving if you ask anyone from the general public). The man of the match (tied with Delph I believe) performance against United - .
Bad overhits, goal was an absolute fluke (which he had 1 more of I believe; from his total of 4) as the shot was going straight at the keeper...

I honestly expect him to do the same things he does today, 2 years ago. At 21/22 I'd prefer he had discipline and the basics and awareness sorted.

Again, that's just my opinion, and we're in no position to demand anything realistically, but I hope he improves a lot and actually reaches his ceiling.

He had two clear header opportunities to score, the first was a poor header, and the second, he missed it entirely. Shearer rightly called him out for it on MotD.

I mean a goals a goal. We have no idea if a goalkeeper would save them. He also lost a goal against Brentford too.

Bottom line is, as a 20-21 year old, he got 4 goals, in the 2nd half of last season. That's a good effort in anyone's money. If he can get 8 goals this season, that would be excellent. It seems for some people that wont be enough.

I'm not sure I'd called the 2nd one clear mate. It was a deflected cross, with no power on it, from about 12 years out and it was behind him.

The first header I agree. I have said over and again he worried about being clattered, and seemed to out jump Koulibaly. He had no right to win it, but he did, and having done the hard bit bottled the header IMO. So he needs to be working at that, as he seems to time his runs well, spring nicely, but had to work on it.

I'm not sure it is poor finishing though, it's more needs to get his head on it.

60 a season or throw him in the Mersey.

A goal's a goal but do you say the same about Niasse? A fluke is also a fluke - no deflection and that is straight at the keeper, this was analysed as the game went on, camera angles and all that jazz.

He played 35 games last season, with only the first 3-4 having those 10 min stints (and 1 vs. West Ham later on, but he was knackered before I believe). There's no "2nd half", we're just collectively blurring out Rafael.

It's only a good effort because we're horribly poor and nearly got relegated. If we were within a shout of Europe - poor.

He has a full season with more stability to show his actual worth, which I hope he does.
